How Jacksonville kept UGA-Florida game

From the Olympics to the Super Bowl to the Final Four, Atlanta has an impressive record of landing major sporting events that other cities want. But when it tried to pry the Georgia-Florida football game away from Jacksonville, Atlanta came up empty. The game's rich tradition in Jacksonville, where it will be played for the 77th time on Saturday, and that city's willingness to sweeten an already lucrative deal persuaded UGA officials to keep the event on the banks of the St. Johns River through at least 2016. It was a relatively rare defeat for Atlanta's sports procurers.

Ahhhh...the language of the deal (MONEY)....

As with UT/OU in Dallas - some things are better left alone.

I don't see how Florida would have agreed to a move to Atlanta - it's far too close to Athens (and much farther from Gainesville).

Besides, how do you tailgate at the Atlanta Dome?

uga GETS screwed having the game in j'ville, i'd force it to a home and home series, why always let florida be the home team....i sense an upset this weekend btw....get em UGA! WOOF WOOF!

October 30, 2009  09:31 AM ET

Jacksonville kept the game because it's the only game in town.

October 30, 2009  09:38 AM ET

Some one enlighten me as to how this game got to Jacksonville in the first place.

A very good question VFH.

Actually not as bad as you think. While UF and their alumni have a shorter travel, the UGA fans need to be given their due for always buying their allotment of tix and showing up in full force. The stadium down have the half and half feel that you see in Dallas for the OU/UT game.

The series became increasingly more personal and fan behavior became more violent when it was a home and home series. It was decided that the pregame would be less of a safety issue if the game was moved to a neutral site. Evidently Dawgs and Gators can't act right at home.

Did they move it to Jacksonville 77 years ago? That would be during the GD and prohibition. Must have been the moonshine that got the folks all crazy.

Most Georgia fans that I've talked to disagree-- they enjoy the trip to Jax.
I've heard it called "the biggest city in South Georgia"-- that seems about right. Culturally, Jacksonville has always seemed to me to be more like Georgia than Florida.

I agree. There are plenty of Georgia fans all over North Florida and Coastal Georgia. It's not like they all live in Athens. In fact, Georgia's second most populated city, Savannah (if you count Chatham County, which the city has grown to encompass), is closer to Jacksonville (an hour and a half) than to Atlanta (about five hours). Having lived in Savannah and in Atlanta, I can also attest to the fact that a greater percentage of Savannah's population pulls for Georgia than does Atlanta's. Atlanta has other colleges located right there (e.g. GA Tech), plus a large portion of its population moved there from somewhere else. Georgia's third major city, Augusta, is a bit closer to Atlanta (about three hours away) than to Jacksonville (about four hours away).

Obviously you haven't been to a Florida Georgia game. Jacksonville the city itself is divided almost down the middle with Georgia and Florida fans. And the travel is not that much different.

I am a gator fan, but due to tickets I have sat on both sides of the stadium. And you can see the difference of the sides. The Georgia fans I have sat next to, were extremely knowledgable of the game as well. I have been to several SEC stadiums, and Georgia and Alabama have had the most knowledgable fan bases I have met.

Blah, blah, blah Georgia fans. Never was an issue for you before Spurrier arrived in Gainesville. "Oh, yes, a day trip to Jacksonville honey?" "Of course."

Now its like a trek versus a jaunt. Not much fun of late, say for the last twenty years - right?!?!

Many Georgia fans feel that way now, but I don't ever recall hearing any complaints while Dooley was around.

God, I loved Ray Goff.

Geez, Vols Rule, you might be on to something; I mean, the Vols have beaten UF like, twice as much as Georgia over the last 20 years. Six times to be exact. So.......it hasn't helped you guys too much either. Here's a better idea, why don't you both go over to the ACC and we'll take Miami and Florida State.

Did somebody pee in your cornflakes this morning?
You better double check...

WRONG. I love going to J-ville for games win or lose.

You seem kind-of uptight. Might want to loosen up the jorts there big guy.

If you're going to call somebody out tough guy, make sure there's a good reason. Vols Rule said nothing that should have pissed off a gator or dawg fan.

See? Dawgs and Gators just seem to like to toss the verbal hand grenades. Gators are probably worse at that, the influence of Spurrier is hard to shake, it seems.

I love nothing better than beating UGa. At the Cocktail Party games I've been to, though, the tailgating has always been outstanding, and a good time had by all - honestly, most of the Dawg fans I know are good, knowledgeable, passionate fans.

They just pull for the wrong team, that's all...hehehe.

Good luck to both teams Saturday, and let's hope for a well-played game with no injuries.
