The Oct. 31 deadline to extend players in the fourth year of their rookie contracts was pushed back to Monday, said league spokesman Tim Frank. With negotiations still open between the two sides, the Celtics will have more time to work out a deal with Rajon Rondo than they had originally planned.

So they are going to build around him and the Big Baby? Sounds like a dynasty is shaping up.

Hard to assign Rondo a fair value when he's has the big 3 opening doors for him so far in Boston.

October 30, 2009  08:44 AM ET

The Celtics might have more time but his agent has made it pretty clear that Rajon intends to be a restricted free agent in 2010.

Which makes sense really. A lot of teams out there need a point guard and a lot of teams have money. It would be up to the Celtics to match any offer.

Exactly!!

Maybe he wants out. He probably knows that after 1-2 years, the Celts will be in rebuliding mode and he doesn't want to be a part of that. Just my 2 cents.

yep-
If I were Ainge- I'd let him test the waters, since it seems like
he ain't giving them a hometown discount- so why possibly
overpay when the market will assign him a value ?

Honestly- I don't think at this stage in his career he cares
about what the team will look like in 3+years......
He's about to get his first big contract- he wants to get PAID
- rightly so....it is his career after all and he has 2 chances
at MEGA $$- this is his first

That's my thought as well. I don't think he really cares about the state of the team as much as he cares about getting as much money as he can off of this deal.

The C's are going to have a decision to make next summer, that's for sure.

Actually a bigger decision is what they're going to do with Allen
He looks good- are they going to offer him a multi-year?
one year? is he going to walk if so?

Personally I would keep Ray. I just wouldn't tip my hand to do so. Maybe let him go out there and see what kind of offers he gets and if it's within reason, match it or offer a little bit more.

Ray will be an unrestricted free agent so if Ainge doesn't extend his contract and he accidentally signs something with another team his green days are over.

You don't just stumble into stats, I doubt any PG would fit with the Celts.

Exactly; and from what's being reported, the 2 sides are miles apart. Another day isn't going to make that much difference. Rondo has all the cards here. If the Celtics won't give him what he's asking, somebody else will. There is probably no limit to what Riley Coyote would pay for Rondo.

October 30, 2009  10:30 AM ET

Rondo is right to go to free agency. Several of the wealthiest franchises have been saving for the summer of 2010 for three seasons. And, with the big names predicted to stay put, Rondo goes from an afterthought to one of the bigger names.

October 30, 2009  10:46 AM ET

It doesn't really matter how much money some franchises have "saved up" because as a result of the current economic landscape, teh NBA salary cap is expected to shrink by several million, so Rondo is not going to get offers anywhere near what his agent is asking for. Why would the C's overpay him now? He is far to inconsistent, and he could get injured before next summer. Plus, is is not a UFA next year, meaning Boston can match any offer sheet if they think at that time that he is worth it. But he still has a ways to go before he really is worth big money. Show us you can make teams pay when they leave you uncovered on the offensive end. Otherwise you are a liability on that end of the floor. And show up for EVERY game, not just 2 of 3. Then we can talk big money contracts, Rajon.

and that's why you're not a GM- never looking at the business
side of things- like the cap or restricted free agent
I'm going to refer to you as Charles Barkley from now on......lol

He is a RFA - the celts can MATCH any offer- regardless of what it is

The CELTS hold all the cards here, not Rondo-

I agree... it is a business. Rondo owes it to himself to see just what other teams are willing to pay. he should go for the max he can get... then it's up to the Celtics to match it or let him move on

I'm sure the Celtics would have no problem trading Rondo or letting him go if it was to their benefit. There is little if any loyalty anymore in the sports business. He has to take care of himself first.. then the team

The celts have the better hand, to be sure, but I wouldn't say that can't lose. It only takes one team to throw so much $$ Rondo's way that the Celts have no choice but to let Rondo walk.

It's a fair chance this is Rondo's last season in green.
