Earlier Thursday, MMAFanHouse reported that Strikeforce would be formally offering Dan Henderson a contract within the coming days. If that's the case, UFC president Dana White is content to let Hendo walk as he feels the UFC has done all they can to keep the former champion. "We offered him a very, very good contract. A contract that's more than fair and very respectable for everything that he's accomplished in this sport," White told MMA Connected.

Gee- letting a much used up 40 year old over the hill has been non title holder Henderson limp away from the UFC how terrible. Hope Strikeforce has alot of metamucil-geritol and medicare for the old hasbeen. Fill the van up with his fans also and let all 6 of them go.
Don't worry Dan there is always barber college.

what, the one big right hand isnt good enough anymore

October 30, 2009  10:21 AM ET

C'mon, no need to disrespect Hendo here - it was a LEFT that took out Wanderlei, he demo'd Bisping and was the only competition Anderson Silva has had since joining the UFC. His eyes may be bigger than his pockets should be, but I'm sure he's just trying to make sure he can retire on this contract and live comfortably.

If you think Dan Henderson is a used up 40 year old then you havent seen his last 5 fights in the UFC and you shouldnt be commenting.
Hendo is a true legend and a true ambassador to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts and Dana White knows this and I think you will see Hendo back in the UFC unless Strikeforce can pay him the big bucks.
He was disrespected by UFC by being told he was getting a title shot and now not getting a title shot. You have to remember this is a man who held two titles from pride before coming over to UFC.

"We offered him a very, very good contract. A contract thats more than fair and very respectable."

Dana should think twice about using these sentences. The Jon Fitch scenario, EA Sports ban, the (now lifted) Affliction ban and unbalanced payroll. These contracts are anything but fair and respectable if you consider the substantial increase in revenue the organization has enjoyed the past 3 or 4 years.

Im far from a UFC hater. I believe they have the best product out there. But I do think the fighter contracts they offer are one sided, restrictive and not up to par with their current stature as an emerging sport.

Bottomline, Dana White and the Fertitas aim to be among the big boys like the NFL, then they need to start compensating their athletes better then what they have been doing.

October 30, 2009  12:24 PM ET

Good luck Hendo. I'd love for you to stay in the UFC, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to get paid. If Chrome Dome Dana won't pay you, then take a walk.

UFC's contracts have been restrictive since the Fertitas and White took over. I agree though that their payscale should at least be commensurate with the revenue their PPV and branding brings in. Not to start a whole other discussion but even MMA's bigger stars are far off from what boxing's name fighters make. I mean David Diaz, a relatively unknown WBC champion got $800K to get bloodied up by Manny Pacquaio who made $3M plus a share of the PPV. And yet Dan Henderson's beautiful KO of Bisping is only worth $250K (100K was for KO bonus)?

100% agree. its truly ridiculous. as a poster mentioned "it should at least be commensurate with the revenue their PPV and branding brings in". currently the ufc has a firm grip of the mma world as it tries to cement itself in the sporting world but continued unfair compensation will allow the mma landscape to change.

Dana is starting to let his ego run the UFC.
Bad news.

Henderson isn't a legend he was a good competitive MMA fighter. He values himself higher than what the UFC thinks he is worth. No one is going to pay top dollar to see Henderson at 40 yrs highlight a PPV card.
I am commenting because Henderson is the one leaving and the UFC opened the door widely for him to do so. So don't let the door hit you and Dan in the ass while you both are leaving.

Bye-bye

No, he is a legend. He is the first guy to hold titles in 2 different weight divisions when he was in Pride and Pride was the best organization in the world. I'd rather see Henderson vs Silva than Couture vs Vera. Henderson is still a threat to get a title. Randy is not, but he is headlining.

October 30, 2009  05:59 PM ET

As long as he keeps fighting, I don't care where he goes. He is a veteran of the sport and should received an above standard paycheck. Dana you suck once again..... Go baby Lesnar so he can get his ass whooped by Carwin!!!!

October 30, 2009  08:29 PM ET

That is the issue Dana knows and understands people want to see Lesnar fight and will pay to see him fight. No one actually cares about Dan Henderson his fan support is mimimal and declining. He should retire.

October 30, 2009  11:02 PM ET

According to most of these fools, any fighter should be able to demand any amount of money and they should receive it. If not, Dana is a terrible promoter.

Fools. Most of you couldn't run a profitable lemonade stand and you think you know more than a guy that runs a billion dollar company.

I think to be fair it would be nice for Dana and the UFC to state what Hendo was actually asking for, and exactly what they were offering him. Would be interesting to see how far apart they are. Until then it is all conjecture, and everybody posting is taking an uneducated stance regardless of which side they take.

October 31, 2009  03:34 AM ET

Let him walk already.

great neanderthal comment with little thought or merit. Dana and the UFC pay fighters generated on fan interest and anticipated gate receits and PPV buys. Obvously Henderson doesn't generate enough interest to warrant big bucks. Seems like you have taken too many shots to the head!!

Idiot...Dan Henderson has been in so many stellar bouts. I am a fan and I am sure I am not the only one!!! It is called paying respect to those have earned it, What the hell do you want Dan Henderson to fight for...chump change?? Do you think he is a chump?? I am so sure no one paid to watch him and Anderson Silva fight!!!! As many lame as title fights the UFC has been producing lately, putting Dan in any of their PPV's generates an interest for that card.
