'Bad apples' in Toronto FC dressing room

After announcing Tuesday that the contract of Toronto FC interim head coach Chris Cummins would not be renewed for 2010, the club's general manager Mo Johnston told reporters he hopes to have a new guy in place well before January's Major League Soccer SuperDraft. Cummins told reporters there were one or two "bad apples" in the dressing room and he raised concerns about them to Johnston. The outgoing coach said perhaps "I shouldn't have let them disrupt it as much as they did."

So let's start speculating...

Sorry, but, while some players may have been louder than others, 5-0 in the biggest game ever for the franchise sounds like the whole darned team quit on him.

Yet, on the surface, they saw it smart enough to ship off Cunningham (with FC Dallas, 39 games, 34 goals) because he was bad in the locker room. Maybe it was a dumping the salary thing, but they dumped a pile of goals too.

And when I begin speculating, I suspect one of the issues was a guy they got from FCD: Serioux.

Yup. Anytime you get blanked in the most important game in your team's history to a historically awful team, that tells me the players were already making tee times for the next weekend. Truly a shame, because it would have been great to see the TFC and their fans in the playoffs.

Did Madrid sell Guti to TFC without announcing it? Can they? I propose Guti in exchange for 2 cans of magic spray, a shin guard (I'm not even asking for the other one) and a roll of tape. but if the roll of tape is being too aggressive, a couple of shoe laces will do.

Cummins went out of his way to specifically single out Guevara as the kind of heart and character the team needs more of moving forward, so I'd speculate about other players folks

I'm going to throw out Pablo Vitti. Had to be a reason for him performing so terribly up here. At least he's only on loan so he can goo right back to Argentina.

Since you're in Toronto and probably have followed them more closely than many of us, who would you say?

October 30, 2009  03:56 PM ET

Rumors are it could be Vitti. Look as he record since 2006, teams can't seem to wait to get rid of him or loan him out...

LOL on Guti ... I put a post on another thread last night about David Silva replacing him January; and now I read a bit of the same speculation this morning in AS. Who says Americans don't know this sport?

Bad apple for TFC = Mo Johnston. I feel bad that such a tremendous fan base is stuck with such a poorly managed club.

TFC needs to be blown up. Johnston needs to go, too. Too bad MLSE is in charge and they embrace mediocrity if sell-outs are common (see Maple Leafs, Toronto).

They need a coach who actually knows the league. Look at the difference in LA with Arena, someone who knows the league and players from his time with the USMNT and DCU. Ditto for Seattle. Cummings has never been a head coach before, he was a youth scout and assistant coach. Carver even admitted he couldn't get his head around some of the quirks of MLS compared to Europe. I'd love for them to somehow pry Frankie Yallop out of SJ, a proven MLS man who's Canadian to boot.
They have the talent and should have made the playoffs this season. They dropped 16 points in the last 15 minutes of games. They seemed out of gas all season towards the end of games, even in mild weather, clearly a by-product of a poor fitness and training program. The fans are restless here, the honeymoon is over. They're lucky the Argos and Jays are so horrible, but they can't count on that next year if they continue to underachieve.

My guess is De Rosario. I don't know for certain and "bad apple" might be a bit harsh, but I know he was frustrated at various points in the year, both on and off the pitch. Occasionally you'd hear fairly critical comments about the BMO Field turf and the team's performance on it. I'd prefer to think it's his competitive nature and the fact he's used to winning, but who knows if Cummins thought he was a problem? I also wonder about Ali Gerba, who came in midway and never really seemed to do anything. Cummins questioned his fitness levels once, so maybe their relationship wasn't great...

I don't know if it's fair to say they embrace mediocrity when it comes to TFC, although the team is certainly mediocre. MLSE is actually very concerned about TFC's success, because the team is their insurance against the sagging Maple Leaf market. Not just because of the Leafs' recent run of poor performance, but because Toronto is about the most multicultural city in the world (annually it's usually either Toronto or Miami ranked on top) and more and more people are coming to the city without a background in hockey but in sports like soccer.
