Brad Guzan knows he must force his way into the Aston Villa side if he is to stand any chance of being America's number one at the World Cup. Guzan is currently number two to Brad Friedel at Villa and deputy to Everton's Tim Howard at international level. But he underlined his potential by making four penalty saves during Wednesday's Carling Cup win over Sunderland -- one in normal time and three more during the shoot-out. Guzan said: "To be part of a World Cup is massive. Do I need to get the Villa jersey off Brad Friedel to replace Tim Howard? I think that would help.

wow I am first...I know, how douchy

Kid has talent... definitely one for the future.

October 30, 2009  11:01 AM ET

doubt this happens unless timmy goes on a serious skid or gets hurt.
i wonder who will be option 3 as well? robles? hahnemann?

October 30, 2009  11:06 AM ET

perhaps in 2014, certainly not 2010....

If he can get the shirt off of Friedel back he's accomplished something big, because you're going to need a crowbar to force the old guy into retirement and he's still stealing points for his team. Good for Guzan though, keepers have to be bold.

A crowbar? More like a shotgun. Friedel will play as long as someone wants him. Guzan is probably in as a good a place as possible for not starting. He gets to learn from a great keeper in Friedel, gets to work for a great manager in O'Neill, and he gets to play for a club that's actually competant in Villa. Barring injury, he'll have a nice, long career.

i wouldnt count Robles out yet.... if we let 1 game depict who dresses we'd have a much smaller pool....

i would imagine Perkins would be a solid option.... guy was spot on in GC

Regardless of what happens, it's good to see the competitive side. Nothing wrong with pushing people for a spot, and keep everyone on their toes.

I usually don't, and I've made the same point you are on here before. But even when someone has a bad match, I usually can see some redeeming qualities. In that match, I saw none for him.

Plus, I've seen him play twice.:)

Robles looked awful, and plays in German 2nd division, I would pick a handful of other keepers over him including a few in MLS

Robles has a lot of potential. He's in a good spot for a young GK'er. i wouldnt count him out, all reports ive heard of him has been positive.

I still dont hold Cervi up to highly, but he's managed to earn a contract with Celtic, and might be loaned out this Jan for PT (his words). I'll eat crow if he proves me wrong, but like you i simply dont see it with him... i could be wrong

certainly is NOT an option for 2010. 2014 is another discussion. Howard and Guzan will be most likely candidates but the 3rd spot is open. 4 yrs from now we might have a completely different look on Gk'ing

October 30, 2009  02:56 PM ET

Howard all the way

October 30, 2009  03:32 PM ET

It certainly is nice having this sort of depth in at least one position!

October 30, 2009  04:41 PM ET

Sorry Guz, not a chance. Even in 2014 Howie might probably still have it locked up. He will be 34 or 35 at that point. Your best chance would be 2018.

My vote is for Perkins. But any of those three could get it.

October 30, 2009  05:08 PM ET

Guzan ought to try stealing Friedel's job at Villa -- you know, starting someplace -- before he gets ideas about beating Howard for the #1 jersey. With the need for depth underlined by the Gooch, Davies, and DeMerit injuries, it concerns me that our second keeper plays primarily in minor cup fixtures. "He doesn't even start for his club" would seem as applicable to keepers as field players.

Let's be real about Robles. He played awful in his one chance and the reason he was picked was probably because someone of his level of club playing time and career experience would be willing to tote the clipboard or whatever it is that third goalies in off-year tourneys do. Cervi served a similar stint in the third keeper slot the year before and no one thought he was the real third keeper. The fact is that until the World Cup arrives most third keepers would rather spend their offseason with their feet kicked up and an icy beverage nearby.

There will probably be a third keeper competition this year and Perkins would be the nominal favorite over MH and a few others. But given that keeper is a streaky position where you want a form player, I dunno if I'd call it in anyone's favor a year ahead. That being said, Cervi, Robles, Hamid and their like are probably too young to have a shot. This is not their cycle. Keepers can play til 40 so I'd not fret too much.

lets see if keller wants to come back one more time

i'm not asking the third spot in 5=10 years. a ma saking for a year from now. the obvious 1 and 2 are howard and guzan, who is number 3?
