Though the deadline in Rajon Rondo's negotiation for a contract extension has been pushed back to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, both sides reacted to the news in almost blase fashion. Danny Ainge said yesterday that he knew of the extension - enacted because the NBA office isn't open on weekends - but didn?'t even discuss the change with agent Bill Duffy, who didn't learn of the extension until yesterday.

Doubt this will happen, hopefully it can be done after the season.

This guy thinks he is worth a lot more than he actually is. He is a role player at best, yet wants to be paid as if he is The Man. The C's shouldn't overpay for this pay, lest he turn into the next Starbury.

He is replaceable.

Exactly. He is hardly a star. He would be a dud if he was playing on another team. Its just that most of the defense's attention is on Garnet, Pierce, Allen and not him. So he gets a lot of cheap buckets.

granted he isn't chris paul-
but he's EXACTLY what this OLD team needs-
an athletic, defensive minded pg that understands his role

Not saying he's a top 5 guy- but he's proved you can win with him
and that's extremely important

best pg in the east

October 31, 2009  11:00 AM ET

Both sides are wrong to some extent. Rondo is not at Chris Paul's level simply because he doesn't put up the points to go with his excellent ball distributing skills. He is certainly more than a role player though.

This is a guy who is consistently a threat for a triple double. He has great rebounding skills for a man his size. He is essential to Boston's offense and shouldn't exactly be treated like dog food. Look what he did against Chicago in last year's playoffs. When was the last time you saw a "role player" almost average a triple double in a 7 game playoff series.

I get a feeling that both parties are dragging their feet on this one. It's like they don't even want to meet halfway or something.

He's the perfect PG for this team, the Celtics need him. Not top 5 but easily top 10.

he's somewhere in the 10-12 range....
but as you said- NOT a top 5 guy-
So you shouldn't be PAYING him as one....

Rondo needs the Celtics and the Celtics need Rondo....Rondo fits in well on that team where he can use his quickness and defensive strengths to counter his lackluster shooting. he is a drive and dish type guard, which works well for the Celtics. I feel the deal will get done eventually

Everybody tries to "rank" Rondo in terms of where he stands against other PG's in the league. Does it really matter? The Celtics will pay him what they think he is worth to THEIR team...I don't think that the salaries of the other top 8 or 9 PG's have much bearing on it. I do know that he was dominant in last years playoffs....but he still can't shoot from the outside. He is a tough player and one of the best rebounding guards in the league. He might benefit from having the big three around him, but you couldn't just stick anybody in that spot and expect them to run that team like Rondo does.

Maybe Ainge knows that he can count on one of his old Celtics connections - like McHale in Minnesota (if he's still there) or Bird in Indiana - to get another guard if he loses Rondo.

After all, McHale gave him Garnett.

McHale "gave" him Garnett? Ainge had to give up one of the best young forwards in the game (Al jefferson) to get him. Remember, Minnesota was going to lose him and get nothing if they didn't trade him. You can blame McHale for not getting a better deal from somebody else, but maybe there wasn't a better deal to take. Sometimes something is better than nothing. I do remember that the Wolves wanted Rondo but Ainge refused to include him in the trade....that might have swung the trade in Minnesota's favor had it happened

Nicely said.
He's a good fit for the Celtic's, and hopefully he stays.
It looks like they both need each other.
That being said, if they part ways Rondo will be worse off than the Celtics (IMO).
Boston can replace him, and Rondo's deficiencies will be more noticeable on a less talented team.

Forget the 'rank'

Bottom line is in 2-3 years- this team is done as a contender
due to the age of their old guys

The point is are you SO confident that Rondo is going to be a
guy you BUILD your future around....that when the old-guard is
gone- that HE will be able to carry the team forwards ?

Also, how do you KNOW you can't plug someone of similar ability
in there ?

Bottom line is you CANNOT pay him a max contract if you're not
100% certain that he's the one to go forward with

Agreed.
Jameer Nelson is pretty close (if healthy).

Dwill couldn't?
Paul, Billups, Harris, Nelson, parker, nash, Davis, arenas, Kidd ?

I mean I just gave you 10 guys that are better-
not to BANG on rondo- just to show you that there are
better pg's out there......that there is NO REASON to
overpay the guy....

Let him go to his RFA year- then see what his market value is
THEN pay/match......why overpay?

Rondo is on the same level as calderon, felton, hinrich, old bibby
