Colorado's Hawkins on hot seat

Dan Hawkins has a chance to set an extraordinary record today. He can become the first coach in the history of the University of Colorado football without a winning season in his first four years on the job. That would be a dubious achievement for a program that has played football in three centuries. Athletic director Mike Bohn doesn't want to fire Hawkins because the coach was his hire; he has believed in Hawkins' cleansing of CU's reputation, and there is the matter of an almost $3 million buyout. But Hawkins has lost too many games, and much of Bohn's allegiance.

The success one has at Boise St with its soft schedule is clearly not an indicator of success in the real world.

Well, Dan, if you lose the gig at CU, you'll have a little more time to skydive.

All Hawkins has to do to assure job security for the next 3 years is to beat Nebraska. Sure hope that does not happen cause I want Nebraska to win. But the buff fans will forgive and forget a coach for a lot if he brings the Buffs a victory against their "arch rival". Heck if that happens Colorado will put up another billboard with the score for the next two years.

Four losing seasons in a row, and he MIGHT lose his job? Coach Bowden's last losing season was 1976, and he's guided the Seminoles to 27 straight bowl appearances, and look what's being said about him. I know this thread isn't about Coach Bowden, just an observation.

Rest easy Sandhill, CU will not beat Nebraska.

Stop it ... never put Hawkins and Bowden in the same sentence.

October 31, 2009  11:54 AM ET

Hawkin's success at Boise State was substantially due to now Boise State head coach Chris Petersen who then worked as Hawkin's O.C. Hawkins should have sent son Cody to a university outside of the Big 12 or WAC as it would have been better for both.

October 31, 2009  12:05 PM ET

Hawkins love for his son was more than his love for his Colorado coaching job. Now it will cost him his job.

October 31, 2009  12:12 PM ET

Hawkins on hot seat? Wow... I bet no one saw that coming!

October 31, 2009  12:14 PM ET

Maybe the refs just need to give Colorado five downs again, that seemed to work out well for them last time.

Dan has been on the hot seat for a while now, sometimes the obvious is not obvious for all...

That's cuz he's older than dirt.

That's funny. And original. I take it by your avatar that you're a Longhorns fan. Mack Brown is a good coach. Maybe someday, if he keeps working hard, he'll achieve some of the things that Bobby Bowden has.

It wasn't a knock on Bowden but you might try decaf you will be less edgy. He's a fine coach. It was a knock on those who are trying to run him out for no reason other than his age and his current record.

It won't take hard work for Mack. It will just require him to coach into his 80's like Bobby.

PS--he's not gonna do it as he wants to retire someday. But with the math, if he continues to win at a 68% clip (lifetime) he would be around 78 when he gets to 380 wins or if he wins at his UT clip of 82% then he would be around 74.

So I would say if he were to hang on forever he'll get there but he doesn't plan on doing so.

Now, take into consideration the history of each program and the shape each program was in when these two men took over FSU an UT. Then you will have a better understanding of Coach Bowden's achievements. It's not a knock on Mack Brown. IMO, Brown is a great coach, one of the top 10 in the nation.

Gotta put Paul Johnson on that list, too.

I will admit I know nothing about the history of FSU. My only beef with Bowden was he seemed to tolerate a, shall we call it, considerable lack of judgement, on the part of his players. Other than that the man can coach.

Tx has a rich tradition but was in the toilet when Mack came on in 98. NE had just won back to back NC's, Fla-the state of, was robbing Tx of their best players--mostly skill players, Tx was regularly losing to Aggy. It was ugly. He stemmed the flow of players to Fla, starting keeping them in Tx and at Tx.

I get the whole, he's old and how can you recruit knowing he may be leaving soon. But seems to me he's earned a pass on a poor year. Bottom line is he, like Paterno, will stay around until the day they don't wake up again.

Maybe he can go coach "inner-murals".

One cannot even begin to compare Texas and Florida State. Texas is top 5 in universities nationally considering-Sports-academics-facilities-boosters/alumni. Florida State is probably in the lower part of the top 30 schools nationally. Mack Brown should in the next few years solidify his reputation but he won't come close to Bowdens accomplishments.

Bowden right now at 80 years old and in the mental condition he is in- is not in the top 50 ranked football coaches nationally. Years ago he was always in the top 1-2-3- coaches.
