War raging inside NHLPA

The battle for control of NHL Players Association has become an all-out war. Already messy after the firing of executive director Paul Kelly last month, the union took another hit yesterday when interim head Ian Penny called it quits because he feels he has been "constructively dismissed" by the four-man committee review set up to look at the union's operations. Frustrated by the committee -- which includes Rob Blake, Nik Lidstrom, Mark Recchi and former NHLer Chris Chelios -- Penny decided to walk away rather than continue to try to fight what has become an ugly battle at the union's head office in Toronto. Sources say players are furious and are "demanding answers" because, not only did Penny step down, the NHLPA's advisory board of Steve Larmer, Dan O'Neill and Ron Lloyd is gone. Lawyer Paul Cavalluzzo also resigned and he might not be the only one to walk away. enny sent an email to NHLPA members last Friday indicating Chelios was undermining his authority and accused of him trying to take over the union. There is a strong belief that Chelios would like to bring Kelly back once a review is complete.

Did you know that once they higher a new union leader, they will be paying 4!

Don't mess with the Malibu Mob. Wasn't Penny part of the group that sprearheaded Paul Kelly's review to have him fired????

Great job PA. How much are the owners enjoying this? When's the next CBA, and how much will the cap go down again...

Who in their right mind would even want this job? They're a laughing stock. I recall they were trying to line up Donald Fehr as an advisor, but now he wouldn't go near this trainwreck. Their big undoing was bringing in Hargrove. There's a big difference between going to bat for blue collar auto workers and million dollar babies.

Here's a name that hasn't been mentioned to work in the NHLPA... Joe Sakic.

I don't remember him ever being big in union matters or even being really of a talker. He seems to reserve and laid back to get involved, IMO.

WHy are they asking Chris Chelios an ahler??

The same reason they asked the former head of the CAW to be their ombudsman? They're lost. But Chelly isn't the worst pick. He brings a lot of experience to the table and he cares. He's not out for himself, he's fighting for the players today when he has nothing to gain other than leaving a legacy.

Karma anyone? Justice will be served if Ian Penny comes back as a weasel in his next life. Oh, wait ....! Never mind!

Now that I took a second look at Chelios' picture, he does look like an over-the-hill porn star with some kind of STD draining the skin color from his face!

He's still trying to figure out which place is Malibu Barbie's.

They called it a "hit" because... it's the Toronto Sun. Sensationalizing hockey stories is what they do best. Just ignore how they only sometimes let facts get in the way. I like the way their story makes it seem like players are up in arms over Penny leaving, when the facts presented by credible news sources leaves it clear they were up in arms over Penny's actions. Especially where he gave himself a big fat raise and contract extension against the PA's bylaws.

Getting rid of Penny and his posse is a good first step. He caused a lot of this turmoil. The PA's best bet is to sort out this chaos now, nearly two years before the next negotiation.
