Fenway Park rink rental to be costly

The NHL will move its Winter Classic hardware into Fenway Park Dec. 10 and will have its pristine sheet ready for skating by Dec. 18, two weeks before the Bruins take on the Flyers in the celebrated Jan. 1 game, with the old ballpark's left-field wall acting as backdrop and 35,000-plus fans eating and drinking up every minute of it. Part of the celebration has the Red Sox and Bruins poised to rent out the sheet for corporate events and pickup hockey games, just like your local rink. However, it all comes with one significant, expensive twist. That one-hour ice rental at a local rink in and around Boston typically would cost upward of $300. At Fenway, the going rate will be $7,500 or $10,000 for each one-hour session.

What are you going to do? You have to pay up.

November 1, 2009  09:18 AM ET

Exactly...Fenway Hockey...PRICELESS

November 1, 2009  09:23 AM ET

You want to play... You got to pay.

why hold the game in a baseball stadium though? A football stadium would be so much better a nd it wouldn't have a weird shape so more fans could actually watch the game!

That is alot of scratch to play an hour of hockey, but you could onnly imagine the memories these kids would get saying that they got the chance to play on the ice at Fenway. That's something they will hold in their minds and hearts forever.

November 1, 2009  02:28 PM ET

Wow that for that much they should of just played the game down in Foxborough.

November 1, 2009  03:35 PM ET

Pure BU**SH** - it was a good joke in Deadstonesmon but then Besterman got his tiny mitts on it...

November 1, 2009  03:37 PM ET

The NHL is doing this backwards. First off they should use this as an opprotunity for kids either in youth hockey or new to hockey to get a chance at something neat. Try to promote your sport with the youth. It doesn't have to be free but don't try to rake in a proffit on a group of kids. I was mad last year as the wriggly gave everyone in the neighborhood tickets to skate but no one else. Sure I could have bought them on eBay or craigs list but not for 100-400 a pop. When they announced it I was ready to take my nieces and nephews and share hockey with them but since they limited it to only a few residents of Chicago I couldn't. Way to promote NHL- if you don't change hocjey won't beable to over take the NBA which is suffering right now big time.

They should have had last years game at soldier field. But since they had so many problems with the ice in buffalo they didn't want to chance it. The I've takes almost a month to get ready for the NHL and that's why they can't do it at NFL stadiums. What they should do is have it at a college stadium as most of them are done by dec. I don't know canadain football season but I think u could hold it there as well. Play it at bOston c. Great hockey program. I was hoping for happy valley. Pitt vs phil. That would be huge. Or a remach at either michigan or msu.
Another thought is start with the original six teams have them host it then go to the first expansion teams (St luis and such). Every other year it's in Canada or us.

They are playing two Hockey East college games there on Januay 8. One is men's BC vs BU the other is women's Northeastern vs UNH.

I think they mean rental fee for corporate outings. I'm sure NHL donates the rink for youth hockey groups and charitable endeavors.
