Eagles wanted Aikman at QB

Seven years ago, Troy Aikman, a Dallas Cowboys icon, almost came out of retirement to play for the hated Philadelphia Eagles. Aikman, now a Fox color analyst who will be in the booth for today's Vikings-Packers game, said nothing he can recall is quite like this homecoming. But he can relate on a certain level. He disclosed to The Times that in 2002 -- after Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb was injured -- he was contacted while broadcasting a game and asked to replace him. The next day, he called Reid and politely declined the offer.

Did you run out of stories about that up and coming AFL league and how they may be able to compete with the NFL in a 1 game playoff soon?

I'm not a huge Aikman fan, but this is a classy move. Aikman is loved by Dallas fans and that would be all but destroyed if he jumped ships ala Benedict Arnold. It's too bad Brett Favre didn't get the memo.

Oh he got it alright. He just thought it had too many big words he didn't understand. Like retirement.

He has been concussed a lot, hasn't he?

Actually, Aikman isn't too bad in the booth. He's a heck of a lot better than Keith Olberman on Football Night in America. Can anyone tell me why that total idgit has a job talking about sports? or politics for that matter?

I wonder how much Aikman would be worth, right now, if he was in his prime. Too bad he still have problems from all the concussions he got.

You actually listen to all that garbage? I keep the volume very low when I watch sports and I never pay attention to pre-game shows or halftime reports.

Yup, I do.

Wow, this is taking nonstory to a whole new level. Maybe next we could hear about what Johnny Unitas had for breakfast before the 1959 championship game. Or Alex Karas's thoughts when he saw Tom Dempsey trotting out to try a 63 yard FG

Whatever works for you.

As for Favre, you have to wonder why he doesn't get the hint. Cluelessness we call it.

I was mistaken in my report last week that Favre ate oatmeal for breakfast, he ordered an omelet and told them to hold the cheese! You hear that Green Bay, he won't even touch your cheese in Wisconsin anymore.

Aikman would of been better than who ever was the back up I am sure of it.

November 1, 2009  08:46 AM ET

Aikman was overrated anyway. He had arguably the best offensive line in NFL history blocking for him (at least the best O-line in the 90's), Michael Irvin to throw to, and Emmitt Smith to keep the defenses honest.

Yet he had a lackluster TD:INT ratio, rarely cracked a 90.0 season QB Rating (only twice in his career), and held onto to ball too long... taking way more sacks than anyone should behind that offensive line.

Basically, the entire Cowboys team stacked, offensive and defensively. There is no way he would have had similar success on most any other team.

He stated the reason for his retirement was back problems. For whatever reason, hope all the concussions don't cause health problems later in life. We have seen way too much of that. Classy guy!

Hey, his talk show is on MSNBC. All two hundred viewers rave about his show.

You know, I have watched a few minutes of his show on a few occasions. That's time out of my life I will never get back. I feel dumber for having listened to that a.s.s clown.

That's why it's called a team game. His greatest asset was his leadership ability. He was an important part of that team's success.

The Grating Communicator, not original but thought it funny. He claims an Ivy League education, yet majored in Communications. Pretty sure Ivy League schools don't offer a Communications major. Actually, he matriculated at Cornell Ag school. Guess if I graduated from Princeton Heating and A/C repair, I too would have an Ivy League education.

Using this theory, Bart Starr and his career 80.5 rating must have sucked as well. That's the problem with looking at a stat sheet and determining who is great and who isn't. Do you think that Neil Lomax is a better QB than Starr because Lomax's career rating is higher?

Troy acknowledged after he retired that a couple of teams contacted him. Another was the Chargers while Norv Turner was their offensive coordinator.
