Notre Dame ducking Miami series?

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in April he wanted to renew the football series with Miami. But Swarbrick now isn't returning calls, and UM believes he's no longer interested because he never responded to two UM proposals (including a home-and-home series and/or a neutral site game).

Personally, I'd love to see it. I always loved watching these guys compete in the 90s.

It seems hard to believe ND, if they were interested, would suddenly start ducking the series. They don't seem afraid to play the big boys.

ND wanted the series when Miami was bad a few years ago, but now that they are back in the national picture again with a bright future...no answer from ND. Shocking. Maybe ND is finally coming to accept the reality that even with a big name coach with NFL bona-fides...this is 2009 and ND is never going to be able to recruit the top talent, which is now largely Southern and minority, to play in frigid, 99.99% white South Bend, IN. Now if only they would pass this message along to their irrational fans, who think they will ever compete for the title again...

Or maybe they're just tired of playin' convicts..................who knows?

They could be, but since CFB has its fair share of bad seeds across the board we should probably be a bit more specific. ND is tired of playing convicts with talent, but if the convict has the same skill level as, well, me then they would just mp at the chance.

Me too - some great games from that era...

The answer is simple. They want to play teams like Tulsa, Utah & Western Mich. Oh, that's right, they are, next year! Why play real teams. They got to keep they gold domes shinny.

November 1, 2009  09:43 AM ET

won't happen even though it would help Notre Dame gain some credibility with schedule

November 1, 2009  09:45 AM ET

n.d. has always been fearful of playing top teams week in, week out. This shouldn't surprise anyone. Look at their schedules for the past years. They play a lot of home games each seasons. Their hard games, which are few, are usually at home. They are afraid to join a conf because of what I believe to be; fear of playing tough opp. and not wanting to share any monies when they go to bowls. For some reason right now they give a pinch of bowl money to the Big East, which they are a part of in baseball, basketball, etc. except football. In this fantasy football bcs league they are an independent. That is wrong! They are the only team allowed to be part of it and it is because of their past and monies and lobbying their alums did to get them in the select groups. This year is no exception. They have won a few games this year by the skin of their teeth. Either they get in a conf or they should not be allowed to be part of the bcs even though it stinks itself. Miami makes them pee in their jocks! Little Charlie is a real work of art. I guess if you have been an assistant for a team that has won a title makes you worth a lot of money and time. I guess n.d. didn't think the other guy Ty was worth the wait. I wonder when they are going to stop playing the Army, Navy and Air Forces of the world and start playing a real tough schedule and also some away from home. This year they play 4 away games. Real tough. Michigan, Purdue, Pitt and mighty Stanford. They lost to Mich and just got by Purdue by 3. Their home schd is really tough;the likes of Nevada, Conn.,Wash St, Wash,Navy!! They have one tough game! Against USC at home. I don't know how tough usc is after seeing Oregon take them apart. In 2010 they drop a couple of the weak teams and pick up some weaker ones; Tulsa,West. Mich.Army rest is about the same. Don't worry they didn't drop mighty Navy!! I guess they like 8 games at home because they will be doing it again in 2010. What a joke. The only reason they are where they are is because of their past and alum's money.

November 1, 2009  10:04 AM ET

ND has held the distinction of the toughest schedule in the nation many times......their schedule became unlike any D1 team.......Stoops,Bowden, Carroll...Spurrier all scheduled lesser opponents in the early part of the season.... ND couldn't continue playing this type of national schedule......its not realistic......all D1 teams play a balanced schedule......some easy games....along with the traditional conference or rivalry games. Its not ducking anything.....its playing a schedule in line w/ the other D1 teams.

You've obviously never spent any time is South Bend ... Like any other Northern city of any size it is Frigid and Not-99.99% white. But to buttress you anti-ND bias I guess you need to invent "facts".

November 1, 2009  10:13 AM ET

So ND should play teams of USC's caliber week in and week out? They shouldn't get any breathers at all? I love hater logic. Believe me, ND isn't ducking a FORMER power like Miami. ND could schedule Florida, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, and LSU and the idiot haters would still come out in droves with jokes about Navy. One thing you can always count on with a haters post is that it will be ridiculously uninformed. Last I checked, ND has never scheduled an FCS team, like just about every other major program does.

Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, USC, BYU and Pitt.....

You obviously know nothing about even recents years of Notre Dames schedule. I suppose USC and Michigan are traditionally (and recently?) not top tier team (with whom ND has alternating year home and away games. Of course away games at Tennessee or LSU don't count. God it is difficult to deal with folks who spew false data they think are facts ... can you see Russia from your front porch?

November 1, 2009  10:22 AM ET

ND has held the distinction of having the toughest schedule in the nation many times. To continue to play a national schedule became unrealistic. Stoops,Bowden, Carroll,Spurrier all
schedule easier games in the early part of the season...its part of playing a balanced schedule.
Some easy games......along with tougher conference or rivalry games. ND's schedule now reflects
what all D1 teams do.....this is not ducking anything....its playing a schedule comparable to all
D1 teams.

I liked playing Miami. Doubt they are ducking it. Maybe they have some other commitments lined up. Texas would be good, so would OU, Nebraska, and Alabama.

If you had any sense of tradition (that is jsut the "past" to you) and loyalty you could understand why ND plays the service academies. In the "past" they were the top football powers when they fisrt appeared on ND's Schedule. Now they largely benefit from ND continuing to schedule them. Oh.. it is frustrating dealing with ignorant envious haters. Learn a little about history smuck!

Actually, according to what ESPN say, since Shanon took over, there has only been one arrest of a UM football player, while UF and FSU both have more.
