Mangini losing power in Cleveland?

Coaches in the NFL lose power when they lose games. It appears that may be happening with Eric Mangini. Last week, the Browns quietly dismissed Erin O'Brien, who had been one of Mangini's confidantes both here and with the Jets. O'Brien was put in charge of team travel arrangements. A source said there was a mixup in Pittsburgh that left team medical personnel without transportation. But reasons for her departure run deeper. A Browns spokesman said that O'Brien resigned "for personal reasons." Sources said O'Brien had burned so many bridges that Mangini could not save her job.

Some would say that good coaches (Cowher, Holmgren, Schottenheimer) grow on tress. Mangini is a potted plant.

How exactly did Mangini ever earn the nickname "Mangenius" in the first place?

You can definitely feel that he Mangini era in Cleveland will come to a quick close.

Their power to suck is almost unparalleled.

This was done sarcastically by the media in NY. He was the supposed to be young brilliant Belichick protege. The name stuck because he was anything but.

And that scene in "The Sopranos" only cemented the name across the country.

Ditto.

Mangini is also losing power in his bowels.

Actually I think it wasn't sarcastic initially, if I remember correctly he beat the Pats the first game they played them. Then he was ManGenius. LMAO I'm sure it turned south after that.

Something with Idiot in the name is more appropriate.

It wasn't sarcastic at all. He went 10-6 with a 4-12 team. He was considered to be a rising HC after his first season there.

Additionally he is arrogant, acerbic, smug, and overweight!

I think teams that recycle failed head coaches get exactly what they deserve. BTW, I'm a Dallas fan and we have one of those, too.

There's nothing wrong with overweight coaches...

Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells have all let themselves go. Too much time spent focusing on coaching, less time spent on themselves.

November 1, 2009  11:16 AM ET

this would imply that he had power at some point

As I said initially he was seen as the brilliant protege. Later on with his poor press conferences and other issues it was used sarcastically by media and fans.

What an incredibly stupid hire! Does he expect to be paid? I cringed when they signed D Anderson to big bucks after a freak year. At least this bunch can't be blamed for trading Paul Waefield for the rights to draft Mike Phipps. Maybe they can bring back Fair Hooker and Jubilee Dunbar for deep threat receivers?

Its, of course Warfield, not Waefield.
