Browns owner: Mangini's job safe for now

Randy Lerner admitted Sunday that he's "sick about" the 1-7 Browns -- but not enough to fire coach Eric Mangini during the upcoming bye week. When asked specifically if he'd make a coaching change, the Browns owner said no. But he did strongly indicate that it's time for him to bring in a football authority who can help straighten out this mess. "There's absolutely no question about that," he said. "The highest priority that I have is a strong, credible, serious leader within the building to guide decisions in a far more conspicuous, open transparent way."

Sounds like Dan Snyder / Sherman Lewis part 2.

Yeah, I'm sure that will go over well with the control freak Mangina. Looks like Lerner wants to get the rat b*stard to quit so he won't have to pay his contract.

Yeah, let's see what Lerner says next week.

November 2, 2009  07:13 AM ET

Mangini's yawning in the picture looks like the Brown fans' reactions to their offense.

November 2, 2009  07:16 AM ET

1st thing cleveland could do to fix the problem, fire the guy who hired Mangini. Then fire more of the front office and some of the scouting department too. brownies 2.0 struggle to find any talent in the drafts or free agency.

not a Mangini fan but the mess up in cleveland doesn't start with him.

November 2, 2009  07:20 AM ET

The Browns did things a little backwards when they made this hire. They found the coach first and then hired a GM that fit with the coach. If Mangini doesn't work out, does that mean that they'll give their GM the boot too?

November 2, 2009  07:21 AM ET

It would be a great move for any GM to bring in Mangini, if he wants for sure #1 pick for the upcoming season's draft.

Toast. Soggy, moldy, maggot-infested toast.

November 2, 2009  07:28 AM ET

Don't you have to give it some time? Things were already broken in Cleveland. This wasn't a team that was going to win the Super Bowl this year. Don't you have to give the guy a chance to pick out the players he wants, that fit the schemes he runs? This was the guy ownership wanted. They should stick it out with this guy and give him all of the resources he needs. They should be supporting him fully, since he's the guy they wanted. It shouldn't be about the short term with the Browns. It should be about how the browns can be successful for the longterm. If the Browns ownership don't believe in their own decisions, why should the fans believe in ownership's decisions?

With mustard on it...

Now Eric, you'll never get your next job by shouting, "Do you want f-in' fries with that or what?!?" Try saying it in a quiet, friendly manner.

November 2, 2009  08:04 AM ET

This was a bad fit from the beginning.

November 2, 2009  08:06 AM ET

Isn't the owner vote of confidence usually made right before the coach is gone.

Caption: *Yawn*...wow it really is difficult to watch this team.

It's almost like you need a good quarterback to field a good team. I don't care who you have coaching this mess, if Derrick Anderson is the answer, than it's a stupid question. Some of the blame should definitely fall on this bozo, but Vince Lombardi couldn't coach this team to more than 2 or 3 wins this year.

Lombardi made his team want to play the game. He made them want to win. Mangina just makes guys want to get traded, or maybe retire.

It would be interesting to see the old man coaching today. Not sure if he could get this crowd to the playoffs, but they'd certainly be a team everyone had to take seriously.

I think the "old man" would puke if he saw today's game, or more specifically many of it's players. What do you think his reaction would be to an **** pulling out a sharpie during a game, or one strutting around like an epileptic stork after making a tackle when your team is down 21 points in the 4th quarter, or one mugging for a sideline camera like some attention-starved high-school jerk*ff? Lombardi would probably cut any of the above players on the spot, and would end up with half a team at best.

Is bringing in a new guy right now going to make a difference?

November 2, 2009  09:07 AM ET

I'm not a Mangina fan, but I do believe that you can't constantly bring in new coaches year after year. He needs to figure out what he wants to do.... although I still haven't figured out the infatuation with Derek Anderson. Is there anyway to bring Tim Couch back?

with the Browns, yes! With the Raiders, yes. With the Bills, yes! With the Redskins, no! With the Chiefs, no! With the Rams, no! With the Bucks, no.
