Jamal Lewis: I'll retire after season

Browns running back Jamal Lewis said he is so distraught with the way this season has gone south after "everybody bought in" in training camp that this would be his last season of playing. "Period. Point blank. I've done what I needed to do," Lewis said. Was that just frustration talking? "When I talk, I mean what I say," Lewis shot back.

Again unfair to be poking at the Browns in what has to be a season of misery. Come on interns leave the Browns alone!

November 2, 2009  07:04 AM ET

Well hes got the ring. Nothing else to really prove.

November 2, 2009  07:14 AM ET

Sad. With the Browns, I thought he already retired.

November 2, 2009  07:16 AM ET

He actually had a pretty nice career. If he hadn't had the legal issues that he experienced in his younger days, he might have been more of a fan favorite. He showed up, did his job, was pretty quiet the past few years and even won a Super Bowl. Lewis should be proud of what he's accomplished.

Larry Johnson should be available at the end of the season (if not sooner).

November 2, 2009  07:21 AM ET

hmm he's got 10000+ yards and a ring. don't know thats enough to get a modern RB in the HoF anymore. lewis has had a solid career, the early legal trouble might keep him out of the HoF if he retires too soon. he plays until he has 13000-14000 yards and he probably gets in the HoF, 10k and legal issues, maybe not.

Proud career... Leaving out in good health.

Not much more a man could ask for.

November 2, 2009  07:22 AM ET

I still remember Jamal as a true freshmen at Tennessee....

Damn I'm getting old.

November 2, 2009  07:36 AM ET

When you retire, can you take Mangina with you?

don't forget the 2000 yard season. He won't go to the HOF with his current stats but will be in the hall of the very very good.

I agree he will need to add a few thousand more yards to get into the conversation.

My guess is if Mangina gets tossed and he likes the new coach he'll stay. sounds like he's frustrated to me.

Yes Sir, indeed.

Morning Otis.

I will tip my hat to Jamal for staying with us has long as he did. If he retires, I won't be mad at him. Unlike Gaylon Edwards, at least he came to play every game.

While he did have a 2000 yard season he had a few others that were duds which is why his total yards are low. I agree this will hold him out of the HOF.

I wonder if he is also saying this to put pressure on the owners to fire Mangina. I know if I was a player I would put whatever pressure I could as he seems like a jerk.

Jamal has had a great career and I think it is best for him and the Browns to pack it up. Any player who has a ring can be happy with their career.

I don't see the dud years in his stats. He got hurt with Balt in 2001 but other than that he's rushed for 1000 yards every year in his career except 2005 (906 in 15 games) and quite possibly this year.

But if he rushes for another 500 yds this year he will have 11,000 in his 10 year career which is 1,100 per year and includes 2001 when he did not play. If he does that and you remove the year he did not play then he averages 1,200 plus per year. Thems good numbers.

Now he's not a TD machine and only has 1800 yds receiving but he's a runner so I give him a pass.

He might get serious consideration right now with that career if he retired but almost certainly would get in if he stayed and hit 13,000 yds.

November 2, 2009  09:32 AM ET

I didn't know Lewis was still in the NFL.

November 2, 2009  09:40 AM ET

how come no one mentions that he did time in jail too? not to bang on him but everyone else's criminal record gets brought up in these posts..

did you even read the thread? several ppl mentioned it. and also mentioned it as the reason he's not getting into the hall of fame unless he puts major numbers.
