Chara silences Avery's chirping

06:55 AM ET 11.02 | Ranger winger Sean Avery, who has a penchant for such things, was shooting his mouth off at various Bruins during the pregame warm-ups yesterday at Madison Square Garden. The trash talk caught the keenly-tuned ear of Boston captain Zdeno Chara. One of Chara's five hits on the afternoon came in the first period and it dropped Avery in a heap, leaving him blinking as he made his way slowly back to the Blueshirt bench. Avery finished the day with decent numbers, including two shots on net and three hits, compiled over 18 shifts and 12 minutes 39 seconds of ice time. Overall, though, the notorious agitator was remarkably quiet.

He might as well get used to it, eh.

November 2, 2009  07:35 AM ET

Chara led by example, not by shooting his mouth off BEFORE the game.

November 2, 2009  07:57 AM ET

Avery - "Oh S*** - it's an eclipse!!!"

Chara - "no - just me."

November 2, 2009  07:58 AM ET

The only thing wrong with Chara's hit is that Avery got up.

November 2, 2009  08:35 AM ET

Awesome, is there a you tube clip?

Zdeno Chara is my new hero.

Very good! I'm with you on that! That's the only language the arse hole understands!

I'm surprised Chara was even able to catch him. I've watched a number of Bruins games this year and I find (personally speaking of course - stay calm Bruins fans) that Chara looks terrible. He looks like going through growing pains again, like he did at the start of his career, or something. Maybe he's hitting his stride now, but he just seemed to be in his own way in the games I watched - including one in person. He's certainly not in line to be re-claiming his Norris this season at this pace either way. This to me is the biggest reason the Bruins weren't doing as well as expected - until SAvard went down, of course.

He should have rag dolled him like he did to McCabe a few years ago.

He's still hitting as hard and often as he had been, but his game is off from last year for sure. He has been having trouble getting the puck out of his end and has been prone to making bad passing decisions in his end. One thing that is really driving me crazy is his play on the power play. He's got the hardest shot in the game, yet is much more likely to pass the puck instead of letting his cannon go. With the power play struggling the way it is...and "struggling" is being kind...he needs to just shoot the damn thing and stop looking for the perfect play. The PP is where they really miss Savard the most, and I don't recall seeing the back-door play to Chara on the pp (which was so effective last year) since Savard went out.

They are replaying the game on NESN at 3 this afternoon. I'll try to grab it, and will post it if I do. Check back here later, I'll let you know if I get it.

He has only looked okay for much of the season... never bad but not the consistently dominant force he was last season. Last two games he has looked much better and returned to his old form... there was talk of a nagging groin injury from the preseason which may have affected his play.

They aren't using Chara's point shot as much cause his tends to go high and off the mark... they have said they prefer Morris's point shot since they actually think it is 'heavier' and stays a foot or so off the ice making it better for tips.

And of course, Savard's absence has really killed them on the PP. It should be noted though that the lone goal in NJ was essentially a PPG... came seconds after the penalty expired and was scored thanks to the power-play pressure.

Torts has had Avery on a very short leash all year. I am someone who can't stand Avery normally, but Avery isn't even Avery anymore. He's not even an agitator, he is a 3rd line player like nearly every other 3rd line player in the NHL. Not sure the Ranger fans like it, but he has definitely been a model citizen this year. Though I will cheer for any good hits to him.

By the way Boston fans, wouldn't it be nice if you had a 36 goal scorer returning to your lineup this week with all the injuries to your team?

Not really seeing as his exorbitant contract would have meant that Boston would have even less scoring depth than it has now and he wouldn't be able to score without Savard dishing him the puck.

True.

Actually Chara and 'high speed' seem contrary positions.

A lot of good it did him, didn't the Bruins get shut out?
