Why Chiefs didn't cut Johnson

According to an industry source, the Chiefs considered releasing Larry Johnson -- who has a history of misbehavior -- but was cautious of the precedent it might set. The Chiefs didn't want to send the message that, if a player wants out of Kansas City, all he has to do is speak out or act up to get his way. It's not out of the question that Johnson has played his final game with the Chiefs, and the next week will go a long way toward determining what happens next. Johnson is being watched.

how long before todd haley asks to be cut from kc?

November 2, 2009  07:43 AM ET

Oh, yeah. "Firings will continue until morale improves."

How about a short list of people who DO want to stay in Kansas City?

November 2, 2009  07:44 AM ET

Its not a bad move. If I'm the Chiefs, I move Johnson to third or fourth string and just don't play him. If they could have dumped his salary, they would have already. Let the young guys, Kolby Smith, Dontrel Savage and Jamaal Charles get some snaps.

Dear Chiefs Management, please don't give this guy the chance to gain the 76 yards needed to become the Chiefs all-time rushing leader. Chiefs fans don't want to remember this guy anymore than we have to. Sit him for the remainder of the year.

I'll bet Haley is chomping at the bit to get rid of this overpaid, under-producing tumor on the team.

November 2, 2009  08:54 AM ET

This team will never win with Todd Haley at the helm. None of the players have any respect for the guy because he has no respect for the players. I'd fire him and demote LJ to 3rd string and special teams.

If they paid me the minimum NFL salary I would go and play after all I would suck and no one would care because the rest of the team sucks as well. But as far as pros I think no one wants to be there.

ship him to oakland.

How long has it been since KC was good? Quite a few years? So it's a ridiculous notion that people want "out" of KC. What did they think they were signing on for when they inked their 3-4-5 year contracts? They had to know what lay in store for them. They were 3-13 when you signed. Did you think that your signature on a 4 year extension would magically transform them? If you wanted out of KC, you should have considered that before your 'eyes got bigger than your stomach' and all you cared about were dollar signs. But then, I guess what? Pittsburgh and NE weren't offering you the same coin? So here we are then.

Who has respect for the KC players? They suck and have sucked for years, and unsurprisingly some of them resent Haley for telling them to their faces that they suck. What do you want? More of the Herm Edwards plan of letting lousy players keep playing because you want to be their best bud? Young Chiefs players who got way too used to getting by with 75% effort are whining about the culture change. Big deal. This is how bad teams learn who the bad-seed players are and weed them out to start the rebuilding process with only the guys you want to have on your team. The Chiefs will let Johnson go during the offseason after doing two things:

1. Communicating with the 30 other NFL teams to let them know just how bad a guy LJ really is, which is as close to collusion as they can get to make sure another NFL team doesn't pick him up on a fat contract and reward him for his bad behavior. He will either end up with a 1-year veteran minimum contract somewhere with some just-out-of-contention team that is willing to take a small risk on him, or...
2. They will make noise about how fast he is and about resigning him to a big deal to try and sucker Al Davis into making him the highest paid RB in NFL history with a 10-year deal to play into his 40's. :D

And before a mouth-breather responds that there are 32 NFL teams...no there are not. There are 31 and the Raiders, which is why I listed them separately.

Nice season Chiefs!

I hope Jamaal Charles go nutzz....show LJ that he is simply and old POS

November 2, 2009  03:05 PM ET

Seriously, why do we heap scorn and derision on the Browns, Raiders and Redskins, but the Chiefs don't get nearly that level of poo dumped on them?

The Lambs, Lions and Bucs are all terrible, too. Tennessee is an enigma, of course, a good team going to dung before our eyes. Despite this, you would think they were respectable teams, because we don't slap them around.

It hurts to watch the Chiefs, but how many fans at the Rams-Lions game thought they were getting their money's worth when the score stayed 3-2 for a long time in the first half? Watching the Pats play the Titans and the Bucs, I kept waiting for the refs to say something like "The game is officially out of hand. By rule, this is a Skunk, and the game is over. Please leave the stadium in a controlled and orderly fashion. Thank you."

C'mon, Commish. Do something about all these really, really bad teams, huh?

November 2, 2009  03:34 PM ET

Good point, resident of gelatinous mass. :)

I would say it is because the Chiefs are in Year 1 of a complete rebuilding job with a whole new front office, whereas the Lions (rebuilding for 30 years with no progress), Raiders (afflicted with Al Davis), Browns (see Lions), Bucs (people remember that they won the SB just a few years ago and can't believe how badly Gruden ruined the team), and Redskins (Dan Snyder; see Raiders) have had time to turn things around and have lost the patience of the football-savvy media. The Chiefs are going to be given more time to weed out the bad eggs and bring in more quality locker-room guys before they start taking too much heat.

November 2, 2009  07:32 PM ET

I think KC should tell LJ the same thing Gen. MacArthur told his troops when leaving Corrigedor: Bye!

November 2, 2009  10:11 PM ET

"Cautious of the precedent it might set"? What is wrong with KC?!? Johnson HAS to be punished! Give him the "Keyshawn Kick-Out" and suspend him from the NFL for a full season. Cancer always needs aggressive treatment.

Let the practice squad finish the season. Heck, they can't do much worse, and they'll actually get some playing time.

LOL. I never use the following words in a sentence with the Raiders: "team", "organization", "win", "chemistry", "competence", "smart".

Great example of team leadership!! Morons! If a player wants out, cut his butt!! Do you think ANYONE is going to pick up someone who was CUT due to bad behavior? Well, maybe Philly or Oakland, but that is like a death sentence to a career, so who cares. Instead of standing up and doing what is right, like Suspending this moron without pay for the remainder of the year, you cut his suspension in half and caved to the biggest distraction on the team and let the other players know that they can get away with it too... Man, I thought with your new management and "new football attitude" that this decision would be slam dunk. Your first major decision is a HUGE FAIL and LETDOWN to the people who love this organization.

Amazing! Cutting LJ proves nothing. Did trading away #69 prove effective (he was a bad bad man). Win games or pack it up, but a whole lot of talk and manuvering is just smoke and mirrors. Even smoke and mirrors can't hide 1-7, lol. What a joke, and it's almost embarrising to read these threads. Just a bunch of useless hatemail, which aint help'n.
