Oden becoming a leader?

The most important development of the Trail Blazers' victory here Sunday evening took root in the morning, when the team gathered for breakfast. Less than 12 hours after the Blazers' defense had been sliced and diced for 111 points in Houston, leading some players to question the effort of the team, coach Nate McMillan talked to the Blazers about a simple concept: family. Not that anyone was taking odds, but not many would have bet on which Blazers player would apply McMillan's concept later that evening during the Blazers' 83-74 victory against Oklahoma City. It was the team's gentle giant: Greg Oden. As a matter of fact, there was nothing gentle about Oden on Sunday. With a voice that was as loud, forceful and stern as ever before, and with animated body language that has rarely, if ever, been seen from him in a Blazers uniform, Oden on Sunday barked, ordered and inspired his teammates.

Then he'll twist an ankle and out for 8 weeks.

The only voice that should be loud should be on the stat sheet for Oden, so far he is off to a slow start of the season being the number 1 draft pick.

I was thinking he'd go on the shelf with a 'iritated larynx'

Praises for Oden should probably be reserved until he plays consistently for at least, oh I don't know, half a season?

November 2, 2009  09:25 AM ET

Hell, he should be a leader...he looks like his teammates grandfather....You gotta respect your elders...

I just hope this is the season he delivers on all the hype. Rooting for Greg just to give us something close to 82 games of solid basketball.

I know I am being optimistic, but like I said I'm rooting for the dude.

This dude is HOMELY!

You stole my thunder jgb! Thinkin same thing!

Talk is cheap. If Oden wants to be a leader, I would suggest he spend some time working on his offensive game. Develop some moves inside, learn how to pass out of the post, and stop committing stupid fouls so he can stay on the floor.

Hllywd. in all honesty, you are right...We can crack all day on how old Oden looks and how his body is made of fine Bavarian Crystal, but the bottm line is a leader is defined by their actions and not just words...To date, Grandpa Greg has not been on the court long enough to really even be a leadership factor for this team.

Bavarian Crystal is pretty expensive--which is ironic because Oden didn't come cheap.

He's actually got a good offensive game, the players don't seem to be asking him to score, just play defense, block shots and rebound. Roy and Lamarcus can handle the bulk of the scoring load.

He really needs to stay out of foul trouble, he can be a real difference maker for them.

Brother Oden is at least 40 years old right?

If Oden becomes a beast in the paint and becomes a 10 and 10 guy then yes the Blazers are going to be Much better than last season but I think it all depends on this guy so hearing about this transformation to take place frightens me.
