NASCAR defends bump-draft rule
NASCAR's change in the rules to forbid bump-drafting in the turns worked as planned for the most part and should not be blamed for the single-file racing fans saw for much of the first half of the Sprint Cup Amp Energy 500 Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said.

It wasn't the rule that caused the single file racing, it was the drivers way of showing Nascar how dull racing can be if they can't lay a bumper on someone now and then.

If their plan was to make the race more boring, then yes the rule worked. Oddly enough, despite their effort to make a safer race, another car ends up flipping. I typically love Talladega. I'm willing to wait through the first 140 laps or so because I love seeing those long trains of bump drafting moving back and forth. This was one of the worst races yet this year though.

That's part of it. I think it may have been most likely due to the drivers just trying to get to the end to make moves and put themselves in position for a win.

I'll be honest, i positively love NASCAR....but I don't know how much more of this I can take. Another yawner of a chase (even with Mark Martin's lead, everyone knew no one had a prayer against the 48), somehow turning once-exciting and fun races into snoozefests (Talladega, Bristol, etc), increasingly vanilla drivers taking over the top spots. With this season pretty much over, I think I might turn off NASCAR until February.

Bristol is BORING, and now so is Dega. Wonder what NAPCAR will do to ruin Daytona? I hope they do it soon, so everyone can quit wasting their time on the TOTAL JOKE this series has become.

I caught the last 10 laps of the race and that is all I needed to see. Racing has become so stale it puts me to sleep! After Newman was released from the hospital he said it perfectly. "NASCAR won't let us race". What is the point to it if it is just 3 hrs of round and round then the last 10-20 laps everyone has to beat the crap out of each other because there is no competition...just cars that all do the same thing. Jimmy Johnson sat in the rear the whole time because he knew what would happen and then after it happened it was NOTHING for him to just move from the rear of the pack to the front because ALL the cars are right there to draft and work off of. I understand the safety aspect of it all...but when the drivers are complaining that they are being too restricted, isn't it time that the NASCAR safety overlords let them race and stop strangling the engines. If they want to do 230mph into the high banked curves let them do it!!! THAT will show race capability and who has the balls to do it will be the winner in the end....after all isn't that what it is all about? If you overdrive your car, you pay the consequences but at least they knew what would happen to begin with and it was by their own volition that they wrecked....not because some **** was drafting and rammed someone too hard and spun them out and you got caught up in the wreck. Sorry but if you can't keep up maybe you should find another job. The flip side to that is if they do let them open the cars up the smaller teams may have a better chance rather than "Another win for a Hendrick Car".

Denny Hamlin - "They give us this car, and then tell us how to drive it."
Ryan Newman - "That was a boring race for the fans."
Mark Martin, when asked what he saw during his wreck. - "Nothing. I didn't see anything."
Jeff Gordon - "I'm glad Steve Letart made the call there for us to come in and get fuel, so that we could go back out and destroy our race car."
I HATE THE CHASE.

I could not agree more with some of these comments. I also have a newfound respect for Ryan Newman, a guy that I already liked. After going through an absolutely ridiculous wreck, does he piss and moan about how unsafe Talladega is and how they should really work to make it safer? NO! He is mad about how crappy the racing was and how the ENTIRE race should have been as exciting as when he got wrecked. That, my friends, is a true race car driver.

NASCAR has GOT to figure out what they are doing to this sport. I read nothing but negative comments around the web, no matter what site it is. The seats are empty, the tv ratings are down, the drivers are unhappy with the quality of racing and on and on. NASCAR is lucky for the loyalty that they have with the fans because, most businesses would be bankrupt by now if they ignored their consumers this long.
I have always said this and now I finally hear someone repeat it---Knock down the banking at Talladega and get rid of the plates. Also, NASCAR needs to keep their nose off of the track and start cashing bigger checks, stay out of the cockpit.
Good luck you deaf, dumb, blind SOB France, Helton, Pemberton and anyone else this applies too.

nascar is now being run by a group more akin to those who run WWF instead of a true sports orgranization/commission like NFL or NBA. or maybe Barnum and Bailey is a closer resemblence.

Very boring race. Good thing football was on. A big time yawner, almost IRL like. You see where that series is.

I watched that race - for about 30 minutes. All I saw, was most of the top 12 cars in "THE CHASE" were simply driving not to lose or crash, rather than driving to win. Johnson, hung out in the rear of the field the entire time I was watching it. Not any excitement nor unpredictability in NASCAR anymore.

This was the worst race I have seen in a long time, and I have been to Fontana twice for the spring race (the one with "weepers" included that sat postponed for like 8 hours before they called it, then took the day off college classes the next day to come back). I used to like plate racing, but the novelty definitely wore off. I'm sorry for those who might like it, but it isn't racing when people sit in line and trains pass people. When McMurray and Michael Waltrip have a legitimate chance of winning, a race it is not. No one was ever on the edge of adhesion through the corners, or trying to lay the power down on the straight, just sit in line and train past each other, then watch the other line go by, then pass them again, it's garbage. Say what you want about indy, but aside from short tracks and road courses, I will not watch another race on intermediates or superspeedways unless its indy or Pocono (with legitimate corners). Make them BRAKE heading into the turns, then we'll see who the real drivers are!
