USC coach Pete Carroll said he and his staff erred against Oregon by restricting the defense with a complicated scheme that caused less-seasoned players to play too cautiously.

Indeed...

... next, Pete will try and convince AP, UPI and the BCS folks that his still "pretty" enough to "win" the NCAA football beauty pageant.

November 3, 2009  07:32 AM ET

It was not the scheme. Sandy Underpants made it very clear yesterday that it was Oregon's High School gimmick offense that was USC's problem. Don't change anything Pete. It wasn't your fault.

It wasn't the defensive scheme Pete. Sandy Underpants made it very clear yesterday it was Oregon's High School gimmicky offense that was the problem. Other teams aren't supposed to play like that so don't change anything. We'll all adapt to you.

This team has no business being in a BCS game. Hello Sun Bowl...

Never thought I would see the day where Pete Carroll started to make excuses like Charlie Weis. Sad.

November 3, 2009  08:55 AM ET

The only thing I can say for Carroll's excuse is that he is blaming himself and his players. Coach screwed up and gave them schemes that they weren't smart enough to handle. Weis would have said something about nobody understanding his greatness and therefore ND should be ranked first due to his superior xo scheme.

November 3, 2009  08:59 AM ET

hahahahahah...of course he did. I love how Pete Carroll always has an excuse after a loss for the media, but when his team is undefeated, he always feels he has the right to comment on 1 or 2 loss teams. It's classic. I can't wait to hear this years non nonchalant comment about why USC should be considered for the BCS Championship this year. Stay tuned!!!!!

That's funny. You must have just started watching college football this year.

unfortunately, that's for the computers to decide... we'll see at the end of the year... PAC 10 is looking pretty strong top to bottom save for Wazzou...

Ohhhhh the computers! BC$- Bowl Corrupt System

I can understand his perspective on their defensive malaise but what are his thoughts on the pro-caliber offense (that could defeat some NFL teams according to Sandy Underpants) only putting up 20 points on a less than stellar college defense? Buehler...? Buehler...?

November 3, 2009  09:23 AM ET

sandy underpants...calling sandy underpants...where ya' at?

Pretty sure that was 5 years ago. Wish he wouldn't have said that when he came in, but please, haters, can you give it up. Honestly, it was less annoying when you guys made comments about his weight. Can we go back to that? It is funny though that there's not a mention about ND in this article, and somehow, they come up. Why don't I go ahead and get this out of the way so all the haters don't have to waste any time typing. Because we've all heard it before.
-Weis is fat
-Weis is cocky and arrogant
-Weis can't coach
-ND is overrated
-ND only gets attention b/c they're ND
-ND hasn't or doesn't play anybody
-Jimmy Clausen sucks
-Clausen only gets attention b/c he's from ND

I'm sure I quite a few, but at least this will help get past all of the initial comments. Hopefully this will help get through the ND banter faster so we can focus on the topic at hand. Pete Carroll reminding the media that they lost because of his coaching approach, not because his team got beat. Had he not made that change, they would have beat Oregon, and they deserve a BCS bid, and blah blah blah. ;)

November 3, 2009  09:36 AM ET

Wow, first real chance this decade and the Domer homers are out in force dumping on USC. Try beating them first, not living through Oregon.

November 3, 2009  09:41 AM ET

You got to know when to hold-em know when to fold-em know when to walk away and know when to run....

November 3, 2009  09:43 AM ET

One game and all you guys pile on. Yeah we got beat. First bad loss in how many years??? Pete making excuses??? He said it on Sat, AND Sunday. They beat us. He isn't blaming anything. What coach doesn't look to make changes, especially after a loss like that one??? It's especially funny seeing any word out of the mouth of a domer. You guys haven't won even a friggin game that was relevent in how many years??? Exactly.

November 3, 2009  09:48 AM ET

He and his staff erred ? I thought coach Carroll alone was the Defensive guru of the all migthty Trojans. Horse manure runs down hill quickly while the smell of roses fades in the Autumn air.

I don't think we're trying to live through Oregon. It's just nice to see USC finally getting the heat they deserve. 1 loss to unranked teams 4 years in a row, and still they get "reloading" credit and wind up in top 5. We've kept quiet about USC because they're given special treatment just as everyone claims ND does, so it's nice to see them get the treatment they deserve. They get just as much attention if not more than ND in recent years, for the hype they get they've repeatedly underachieved, and it's funny that an Oregon loss opens peoples eyes. I'm not saying ND is better by any means. However, it's nice to see a team held accountable for losses for once. Especially a team that is always a top 2 or 3 favorite to win the championship every year, just to piss that away with a crappy mid season loss.

November 3, 2009  09:56 AM ET

Boy, Carroll's face sure is getting old and wrinkly, Old man gray has take'in over as well, might be time for Pete the Poodle to retire to the farm.

excuse: to try to remove blame from

I'd love to pile the pain on to the Trojans as much as any other college football fan, but how is Petey-boy making excuses here?

Looks to me like he's taking blame. I dunno...
