Fourth-year forward Rudy Gay and the Grizzlies failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension before the NBA deadline. Negotiations broke off Monday evening so Gay will become a restricted free agent next summer. The Griz still can match any offer sheet Gay signs. An NBA source said the Grizzlies' final offer was a five-year deal worth about $50 million. Gay was asking for a deal similar to Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge (five years, $65 million with incentives), according to the source.

Good for him, he's a good enough player that can really help a playoff type team. Hope he gets to play for one.

I'm just confused with the direction this Grizz teams headed. It's like they're half rebuilding and half contending (or at least attempting to).

I understand your comment on rebuilding (that's a constant for that franchise) but I can't get "contending" and "Grizz" in the same sentence.

Hahhaha!! I get what you mean. I would have given them the benefit of the doubt regarding wanting to at least be competetive . But signing AI, and having him play along with Zach Randolph? Are they for real?!!!

It'll definitely affect the growth of that budding young core they have there. What a waste!

I don't think Rudy Gay is worth 13M a year-maybe 11M like Rondo...

November 3, 2009  09:14 AM ET

The grizz are playing hard ball. They are taking a lesson out of the knicks playbook on how the handled David Lee and Nate Robinson. They know that the big money that is going to be available this summer is going to the major stars first. Rudy Gay is a second or third trier player. He shouldn't ge paid more than $7.5 to $8.5 a year.

I don't think he is either- but it's the Griz-
not sure if they have a choice.....

He's young, has proven he can score in the league.
I'd agree he isn't a #1- but he absolutely looks like
he's growing into a solid #2 guy.....

Some team will offer much more on the open market (IMO) and
Memphis will match- so they'll retain him...

November 3, 2009  09:30 AM ET

No surprise, playing on a terrible team his value is blown up and he thinks he's worth more then he is.

Rudy Gay isnt worth even the $10 MILL he turned down. HEs the type of signing that will handcuff a team in the future so let him leave if $50 MILL isnt enough to "feed his dam family."

its all about relative worth..he may not be worth that much money to a smart GM but as we know in the NBA...there are not many smart GMs!

November 3, 2009  09:36 AM ET

I don't think Rudy is worth max money but someone is going to offer him at least close to the 5 year 65 million next summer and it's going to be up to the Grizz to match.

Funny thing is I bet they won't. Rudy Gay is going to be wearing a new jersey next season.

November 3, 2009  09:47 AM ET

So the Grizz were about 15 mil off of Rudy's hoped-for salary. I am sure that he'll glady take 50 mil and be on a team that actually matters. Hopefully we'll see Rudy on a team that can win (Go Spurs).

Gay is not worth it, hes too inconsistent

Both are absurd numbers..the pay is just insane

Agreed. He's getting better, and he would be an upgrade for a lot of teams next season. Also in his favor is that a lot of teams will have the cap space necessary to bring him in. I won't be surprised if he is offered the max and the Griz wont match that.

I am not sure about the max, but he has Amare type potential offensively and is probably a better defensive player...I wouldn't be surprised if he comes in in the 15-16 million per year range

he's 23, has scored 20 pts & is a 18-20 pt scorer- andhas kept up
his scoring on a team that added Mayo and Zach.....
Plus his rebounds have increased also....
you're right- he'd help ALOT of teams-

Funny you say he may end up in NJ- cause hee reminds me of
Richard Jefferson- maybe a little more athletic(stronger)-
though not as good defensively
