Goodell seeks Congressional amendment

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants Congress to amend the Labor Management Relations Act to protect the league's collective bargaining agreement from state-law challenges such as those Vikings defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams are using to fight their suspensions. Goodell plans to testify to a House subcommittee today that changes are necessary so players cannot use state law to circumvent the sport's drug-testing policies and gain unfair advantage over their fellow competitors.

congress needs to get off their butts and revoke the nfl's antitrust exemption.

Goodell is just trying to protect his GOD complex of his position.... he feels only HE knows how to punish players... law or not. He also needs control of everything to ensure he makes the NFL more money and keeps the owners happy

November 3, 2009  08:52 AM ET

he should just suspend the player when they don't play in there home state. When you work in another state, your subject to those rules also. Cheating is not a way to win.

Goodell has no choice, and neither does Congress. You cannot have different rules for different players depending on what state they play in.

November 3, 2009  09:21 AM ET

It is ridiculous that Viking players are exempt from the rules that every other player in the league have to abide by, policies negotiated by the NFL and the NFLPA (who also represent Vikings players), which is basically what Minnesota courts have decreed.

I agree. Trying to do business in 50 different states means greasing the palms of a lot of politicians. Some places are pro-management, and some are pro-labor in their laws. Because of TV contracts and college recruiting, the NFL really does need to worry about the laws everywhere. Sometimes, it's trivial, but other times you get contradictory rules.

It's not just the NFL, either. The auto companies had to do all sorts of special stuff for California.

Agreed - not even state-court sanctionned cheating

November 3, 2009  09:54 AM ET

dude this is about the Vikings and the need for them to win. if Kev and Pat aren't on the line then the Vikings lose and that D is weak, and the Vikings have no chance and then theres talk about selling the team, i think as long as Favre is their Pat and Kev won't be suspended

November 3, 2009  09:56 AM ET

But a team can videotape an opponents practice and use that to game plan against them. Oh wait, thats only the Patcheaters.

November 3, 2009  10:40 AM ET

I would love to see Congress stick it to the NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL and the whiney multi-millionaire players and billionaire owners

They were caught and penalized, so one has nothing to do with the other. However, in retrospect, maybe the Pats should have appealed to the Massachusetts state court for an injunction that the Pats and only the Pats be exempt from the rules, and maybe would have gotten their fines & lost draft choices, like how the judges in Minny "support" the Vikings by exempting them from league rules.

According to the new rules, it would depend on what state you do it in i guess. that is a lower court said about the vikings players, you can do what they did in minn.

I also noticed that the General Counsel for the MLBPA stated that there was no need for legislation.

Those baseball players - a barrel of laughs.

NFL's Antitrust Exemption
The NFL Antitrust Exemption was created by the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 in response to a lawsuit. The creation of this act has enabled teams to pool their broadcasting rights to enable the league to make specific contracts with broadcasters on their behalf. This has also enabled the blackout rule that limits broadcasting of home games in the home team's local area.

What does that have to do with this? Goodell wants the drug policy to not allow necessary so players cannot use state law to circumvent the sport's drug-testing policies and gain unfair advantage over their fellow competitors. Nothing about broadcasting blackouts in this.

Look a player should be allow to appeal to an neutral obertraitor about this, which currently the NFL does not allow. Right now the players can only go through state law they have no other recourse. The NFL Players Union wants a neutral obertraitor, which is something that will be on the bargaining table soon.

as crybabyraider pointed out, it's cheating. If they can't abide by the rules, then the NFL should have them move to a new state...lots of cities would love an NFL team.

One of the thousands of reasons I don't watch that sport anymore...

That said, I agree with 50yearfan. The rules shouldn't change because of where you play.

Meanwhile, Goodell is considering expanding to England - will the league's rules be enforceable under British Common Law, even with a Congressional ammendmant?

I can see it now - "Personal foul, Roughing the Queen's Quarterback."

And, besides the 15 yards, 2 Beefeaters with halbards march out on to the field and take Fat Albert Haynesworth off to the Tower to be beheaded. Rumpole of the Bailey files an appeal, however, delaying the execution. Fat Albert is released when the Prime Minister realizes that feeding this guy will bankrupt the Crown.
