Elias closer to Devils return

After missing the first several weeks of the season recovering from groin surgery Sept. 15, Patrik Elias made a successful return to practice for the Devils yesterday. Despite his lack of conditioning, Lemaire didn't rule out Elias playing in his first game this season tomorrow night against Washington. However, when he was asked if he could be ready that quickly, Elias didn't seem very confident.

Good thinking, put a guy who just needed groin surgery into a game before he is in game shape. There's no history of that leading to groin injuries...

0 to 100 mph after groin surgery is a bad idea. There is NO WAY we should see him play this week or next week. We are holding our own right now in the standings - let him work his way back up to playing condition. Then throw him on the 3rd or 4th line for 6-8 minutes a game for 2 games and assess how he is progressing. We play 2 fast teams this week. Whatever you do - DON'T RUSH HIM BACK!!!!!

Everyone settle down, most likely he will play in one of the weekend games. They said it was a 4-6 week injury and he will start playing in over 7 weeks so they are not rushing him by any means. He will go through a few practices than play like 12-15 mins for the first few games.

Either way - I can't wait for his return. What a fun player to watch!! I'll be at the Isle's game but I see him possibly playing the lowly Sens instead of the hot (for now) Isles.

"successful return to practice" doesn't translate to "game condition." The dynamics aren't the same. What's the rush?

They aren't rushing him, he will be out for 8 weeks which is two more than they originally said, for the very reason as to not rush him. These players coming back from injury usually get 2 or 3 practices in first before a game and that's exactly what he will get.

Man there's key injuries to almost every club it seems. Good to get injured now i guess as opposed to the end of the season.

November 3, 2009  02:11 PM ET

Yeah, alotta clubs dealing with significant losses right now. Except that is, for the teams that are sitting at the top of the standings not based in Pittsburgh. Speaking of, when does everyone expect the Avalanche to actually start heading downhill? Or Penner to start playing more like Penner? A month into the schedule, the world has to start righting itself soon, right?

November 3, 2009  02:15 PM ET

And I think the injuries will only get worse due to this crazy schedule because of the olympics. trying to cram in all these games is not good for hte players.

Well said Doctor!!

November 3, 2009  08:09 PM ET

The team that he generally plays twice as good for, would certainly opt for ALL the rest it could possibly take, and then a little more, dim sum - like, as in right up until the time it would take him to get into game shape, prior to the beeg torch going FAAAA-WUUOOOMP.
