Drivers complain about boring Talladega races

Driver after driver griped about their sanitized Sunday drive, even as they turned laps around NASCAR's fastest track. A combination of a pre-race ban on bump-drafting through the turns, the horsepower-sapping restrictor plates that are used to control speeds, and the desire to be racing at the checkered flag led many drivers to utilize a conservative strategy for the first three-quarters of the race. A track known for electric three- and four-wide racing had been reduced to a single-file parade lap for a large portion of the race.

PREACH ON DRIVERS!

Forget about what some of your brethren are saying. Jeff Gordon has turned into a shell of his former self (I think fatherhood has made him soft). And look at the difference between Carl Edwards' and Ryan Newman's reactions after their respective accidents at Talladega this year. Newman said he wishes the entire race was as crazy as that, and Edwards whined about it. I am going to be put in the odd position of supporting Kyle Busch in this movement as well, because he is one of the ones that is PO'ed the most.

Has there ever been a drivers strike? I think now would be a good time for one, because France sure aint listing to us fans. IMO there has been to many snoozefest races this year. I remember when it was just the cookie cutters that was boring, now they took the fun out of Dega and that aint cool in my book.

no...because that would equal no racing, which in turn would equal more tennis and golf...no thanks, no thanks.

Nascars concern should be with the fans and only with the fans.
Drivers are paid to drive, Fans are paying to attend and purchase services.

I gotta agree with you Bodyguard, Drivers aren't going to fill the seats or sell merchandise if the Fans are not happy.

But something needs to be done before Nascar goes the way of Boxing or something. Nascar was a great sport, but has been watered down by a grandson who only cares about $$$ and doesnt give a rats **** about us fans.

Can you say Vince Mc Mahon and the WWE?

you are absolutely correct...the COT took away a lot of interest in nascar for me. that stupid COT made the racing very very boring. i understand they brought this COT into nascar to cut down costs. well the same teams are winning week in and week out. and then stupid rules like the one they made for Talledega..i watched the talledega race, and after about 30-40 laps, i could tell all that would matter would be the last 20 laps.
what nascar gave us at talledega was EXACTLY what nascar haters call it-cars going around in circles. that wasnt racing. not at all, and the idiots who run nascar need to realize what they are doing to the sport.

The very first race at Talladega invloved a drivers strike.
Lot's of top guys left and the teams filled the field with fillers...Hence, Dick Brickhouse was the winner. The organization was called the Professional Drivers Organization led by Richard Petty.

I wait for the short tracks now, something I thought I would never do. Where is that I HATE THE CHASE guy? Get rid of France, plates, and that bland California racing. (That ought get something going here :)

November 3, 2009  11:02 AM ET

What should have happened was in the first corner, all 43 drivers should have bump drafted so NASCAR would have had to penalize them all.

No way they would park JJ or Gordon or the beloved Milkman... Those 3 should have led the pack in bump drafting and told France and Helton to stick it

Except Bristol though...that race sucks. Martinsville is the only exciting track left on the circuit

fans hated Dega, Drivers hated Dega. would be unanimous if Helton, France and Pemberton change tunes.

November 3, 2009  12:30 PM ET

I wouldn't miss it if they never raced at Talladega again. Race car driving will never be safe, but it should be safer than it is there. I can't think of a way to make it any safer; smaller restrictor plates certainly didn't work, smaller gas tanks didn't work, so maybe skipping it altogether is the answer.
But I know that is probably a minority view.

Ever omnipresent, and at your service.

November 3, 2009  01:29 PM ET

Oh, and I HATE THE CHASE, btw.

November 3, 2009  01:39 PM ET

As much as I hate to say it, Talladega has become as boring as Indy. Either remove the plates and let them race this track the way it was built or tear it down and start again. Or take one of the races back to Rockingham.

Cant believe more people did not comment on this today....are fans starting to become resigned to the fact that NA$CAR is being driven into the ground?

waiting to hear "Here come the money" ( Shane McMahon's entrance song) everytime i see Brian France.... LMAO
