Because his right hamstring had been slow to heal, Lakers forward Pau Gasol decided to undergo an examination, one facet of which was a sonogram that revealed he might have a slight tear.

If that is the case, he should just get it fixed now. The Lakers were a much different team without Pao against the Mavs the other night.

Yup, better get it fixed now Pau. While there is still enough time to recuperate. Also, you will need time to get your groove back once you start playing again. So the sooner you get that hamstring injury fixed the better for the Lakers!

Shut it down NOW! He'll be back by New Year's and back in shape by the playoffs. Wait ... I'm a Spurs fan ... KEEP PLAYING, PAU!!!

Expect David Stern to help his Lakers with another lopsided trade if Pau is really hurt.

Is there really a "fix" - in terms of surgery - for a hamstring injury ?!

I haven't heard of such a thing - but I could be wrong.

Usually, the only thing an athlete can do for muscle tears is to undergo physical therapy and strengthen the muscle.

Ligament and tendon tears - that are related to joint issues - are the ones that are surgically repaired.

I am confused I thought he was healthy, when did this happen, it sounds more serious then what I thought it was.

Hamstring issues occur with basketball players because of two reasons:

- They have unusually long legs, and the hamstring is stretched beyond normal.
- They do a lot of running, which exercises the quads (muscles on front of the legs), while neglecting the hamstrings (muscles on back of the legs). That leads to a MUSCLE IMBALANCE, which causes the injury.

The ways to prevent this type of injury are to:
- Stretch thoroughly before exercising
- Supplement the basketball workout - which work the quads heavily - with exercises in the weight room. Athletes are supposed to do both leg extensions (working the quads) TOGETHER with leg curls (working the hamstrings), so that BOTH muscle groups stay developed and avoid injury.

Another approach is to do some swimming, since swimming uses the hamstrings more than the quads. That's why physical therapy for these types of injuries often involve rehab in the water.

Cheers,
J

I guess if he does sit out, we will see how good the Lakers are with Bynum as the main bigman.

This may be Bynum's big break! It' make or break time for him. I hope it's the former!!

Wouldn't it be sad if his knee started acting up again too?
They would have to put Odom as centre...or maybe his wife, she's a big gal :)

November 3, 2009  08:43 AM ET

It really doesnt matter cause the Lakers will not repeat!!!

November 3, 2009  08:48 AM ET

I knew this was going to happen.

This is why the NBA should limit it's player's off season activities.
Gasol wore his body out playing without a break for two teams season after season, just like Ginobili.

He needs to decide what is more important, and devote himself fully to one team or the other, or the NBA should pen this into their contracts.

November 3, 2009  08:52 AM ET

It's Bynum's year; one way or another, he's going to prove what his value is to the Lakers. The Lakers are as good without Gasol as long as Bynum stays healthy and continues to be aggressive. Don't give up hope Laker's fans.

This is easier said than done. We all know that the NBA is the bread and butter for these players, but playing for your country is an opportunity that IS not given to many. And these players take a lot of pride in that.

Maybe, they can put in a clause wherein these players play every other year ONLY during the offseason. Instead of every year . This should reduce the wear and tear on their bodies.

Dynasty, is Pau wearing a ring in that picture?

Jose Reyes of the mets has been dealing with this for a year
he just had surgery last month-
and is expected to be 100% for training camp-

Anything can be sutured up/cleaned up

November 3, 2009  09:32 AM ET

They'll survive without him till he's ready, no need to rush or panic.

November 3, 2009  09:37 AM ET

of course he was my 2nd round pick in my fantasy draft..thanks Pau

November 3, 2009  09:38 AM ET

Pau's a loss but they can hold down the fort without him right now. Best thing for him to do is to shut it down now so he can be healthy later on in the season.

That would make for an interesting Team USA then. Back to the days of college players representing the country?
