Cheater tag upsets Gordon

Jeff Gordon is upset that NASCAR drivers who bend the rules are called "cheaters." "If a lineman holds a guy from getting to the quarterback, they give him a 15-yard, a 10-yard holding penalty. They don't call him a cheater," Gordon said. "That's the thing that upsets me. In racing, it's always been about trying to push the limits and, yes, sometimes you push it too far and NASCAR pulls you back. "But, in this case, they're putting such harsh penalties out there and suspensions that it's making it look like we're the cheaters out there, and it's not the case at all. Everybody out there just pushes the envelope, and it shouldn't be considered cheating."

Jeff Gordon is a proven NASCAR Champ and I'm learning to tolerate and EXPECT his whining. But his analogy of a lineman holding in a football game, to that of a NASCAR team fielding an illegal or altered car outside the rules for an entire race, is a bit much. Sorry Jeff, no sale this time.

Perhaps HMS pushes the envelope more than others and therefore gets caught more than others? Duh. "Cheating" has been around since day one, he could have shown some remorse. This sounds like whining, yup

Cry me a river, sissy boy. "Everybody out there pushes the envelope" and goes thru the same tech-inspection. Does everybody get hit for cheating?

Pit road speeding or running over an air hose might be analogous to a 15-yard penalty, it does not make you a "cheater". Illegal mods to the car are more like pumping all of your lineman up with illegal steroids to boost their performance. That would be....CHEATING.

July 11, 2007  10:40 AM ET

Almost 50 other teams a week seem to have no problem getting through tech on a weekly basis. How about that, Jeff?

July 11, 2007  10:56 AM ET

So, rules are more like "guidelines". They aren't meant to be hard and fast.

Jeff, if you don't like being labeled a cheater then don't tolerate it in your organization.

Even better, Jeff, how about taking the high road and telling Hendrick that if he doesn't control his people better and prevent cheating on the team then you will quit?

HAHAHAH!!! LOL!!!! No, really, I mean it! HAHAHAAHA!!!!

That'll be the day!

Here's your "I'm a Cheater" sign.

LOL

I think Jeffy would need more than a step-ladder to reach any moral high ground. I think BigTex may be asking a little too much.

Besides, if he left Hendrick's, who would do Jimmy's hair and nails before a race?

July 11, 2007  11:39 AM ET

I sort of understand what he's saying, but I completely hate his analogy. You can't compare an NFL lineman to a finely engineered racing machine. Just doesn't work.

July 11, 2007  12:09 PM ET

Sorry Jeff......it's called cheating....

BigTex, that was funny as hell. Football Guru, follow BigTex's example.

Somebody needs to tell Jeff to change his manpon......and to buy a shovel so he can get the sand out of his ****. Cry baby.....

July 11, 2007  03:15 PM ET

Jeff is supposed to be part of Nascar's 'Elite'. Act like it!! If you represent your team, then make your team represent you. If you don't want to be labelled a cheater, then make sure everyone that represents you on the car does nothing to put you or themselves in the catagory of being seen as a cheater! Complaining about it only produces hot air which continues to inflate the bubble and make it larger than it needs to be . It's done, the penalities handed out, and it will go away (at least until the next time).

Hey gstrdr, that's why they hired Dale Jr.

July 11, 2007  03:35 PM ET

I'm sure Gordon will be crying, again, as he steps on stage in New York to accept his 5th Championship!!!

July 11, 2007  03:37 PM ET

H!05: Jr. rarely combs his hair, never shaves, and reportedly likes GIRLS. He and Jeffy/Jimmy will have very little to discuss during the Hendrick Ladies Slumber Parties.

July 11, 2007  03:40 PM ET

FLETCH: Even if he isn't crying, I know several race fans that will feel like crying. Allowing Hendrick to buy another championship would be a tragedy.

July 11, 2007  03:57 PM ET

It's more like greasing your jersey up with Crisco than it is holding....and that is considered cheating.

July 11, 2007  04:27 PM ET

Is hitting another car and spinning them out and possibly causing them to crash, destroy a car and lose major points cheating?

If so "the Intimidator" would be the all-time cheaters cheater.

Gordon is by far not the only driver, Hendrick by far not the only owner who have been penalized or suspended for illegal parts and modifications.
