Why Cowboys passed on Quinn

After passing on Brady Quinn with the third overall pick, Cleveland had its man because the Cowboys believe they already have theirs. Tony Romo is entering the final year of his contract and the Cowboys have had only mild talks with his agents about a new deal. Given Saturday's move, Romo appears to have leverage on his side.

Dallas will see how Romo fairs this upcoming year at a bargain salary - if he succeeds, they will award him. If not, then they can fall back on Cleveland's number 1 pick next year to select a QB. There will be other Quinn's out there next year in the top 10 of the first round. If Romo does succeed, they can package some picks and get a young WR to complement Romo or pick a RB if Jones doesn't work out. This creates more flexibility for Dallas.

Yeah but I bet at some point in the season their going to seriously have to think about putting brad johnson in the game. Because this guy is still a starter and he still got it. Plus he's way more poised and experinced than chokeo who is a flash in the pan and is definitley not the next great cowboy Q.B.. This guy aint better than Brad, Bledsoe, or Quincey Carter. No matter how well he plays he isnt going to take the cowboys to the promise land even with all that talent around him. Its to bad the cowboys don't have keyshawn anymore so Brad Johnson could give him the **** ball.

April 29, 2007  07:05 PM ET

Looks like a risky proposition esp in lieu of how Romo started playing once the scales fell off his eyes, er once he started dating celebs, LOL. He should be fine but it wouldn't have been a bad thing to have drafted Quinn to give him some competition and then if he failed this upcoming season you let him walk and you have your future QB. This gamble by Jerry Jones might blow up in his face.

April 29, 2007  07:31 PM ET

Wow Killacam. I like how someone can be labeled a flash in a pan after one season. There is nothing out there to support your statement for Johnson or against Romo. I'm neither saying Romo is going to **** or stink, but so far as a starter, the team was something like 4th in scoring offense in the NFL. I don't see how not drafting Quinn was such a huge gamble. I never saw Quinn do anything against a defense that was decent in his college career. I'm not saying that he's not going to be good either, but its not like this guy was Dan Marino in college.

April 29, 2007  09:28 PM ET

wow airforce, I like how you don't look at the stats. Quinn threw for over 200 yrds against USC and michigan this year. They lost those games because of defense, not offense.

April 29, 2007  10:22 PM ET

They passed on Quinn because... he's not that good!!!

April 29, 2007  10:54 PM ET

OK, did anyone watch Romo in the Pro Bowl when he had recivers that didn't drop the ball? Romo will be fine Dallas lost last year because they couldn't stop anyone....and when did there Defense fall apart? When Greg Ellis went down. That is exactly why they drafted Spencer in the First round and not Brady....OH and the first round pick that they recieved from Cleveland probably top 10 next year.....Why do you think so many other teams passed on Brady? Because he beat-up on the service academys vs. USC lost x 3, vs. LSU lost , vs. Michigan lost , vs. Ohio State LOST......He's not proven! Maybe he didn't have great DEF support but he never won a big game period. So, why would dallas use their first round pick for their 3rd string QB? Yes he would be their 3rd string this year. Now that Romo has beenlet of Parcells leash we will have a true measue of how good he can be........If he sinks brad steps in for a year and Dallas uses Clevlands 1st round pick for a QB next year.......

April 30, 2007  12:14 AM ET

Hey biglat wasn't Romo booed in the Pro Bowl??? Yup, pretty sure that was a first there. And sure maybe Quinn isn't a sure thing by any means, but look at the scores of those big games and you really can't expect just one player to make up for the almost 40pts a game the defense gave up in those games. expecting him to have to throw 6 tds to win is ridiculous and should be fine with what he has

April 30, 2007  12:23 AM ET

Jerry Jones might be disliked by many but he has made his share of smart moves in addition to those dumb ones. Time will tell.

April 30, 2007  01:02 AM ET

actually Dan Marino had a very poor senior year(more ints than td's) which is part of the reason he dropped.....that being said,
1- I think Brady Quinn is more Joey Harrington than Peyton Manning. All I know is everytime I turned on the TV, Notre Dame is getting their face smashed in by somebody else whether it was Georgia Tech, Michigan State, LSU or Michigan. Give him credit for coming back, but he didnt exactly come out on fire to keep his teams in those games. If you build a 20-30 point deficit every week in the NFL, you'll lose 99% of the time.
2- Romo is a better than Quincy Carter, and I would definately prefer Keyshawn over TO. I know people are all going to say, "oh look at his stats", Firstly, if you projected TO's stats w/ Bledsoe over the first 5-6 games of the season, they would've turned out less than the stats Keyshawn had w/ Bledsoe a whole season. Not because the guys aren't good, but because Bledsoe prefered Glenn. But Keyshawn brings a lot more to the table than just stats, I think Parcells would tell you the same thing.

April 30, 2007  01:07 AM ET

Well if we just go by statistics then Texas Techs QB should be picked in the first round every year JYeager. I also remember seeing him go against Ohio State last year and not do anything. I remember him throwing around three ints in the Sugar Bowl.

Once again I'm not trying to bash the dude. But if your going just by statistics in college, then your crazy.

ND wasn't that good of a team, but the defenses in the NFL are closer to that of LSU's. Certainly in the division that Quinn will be in.

Yeah he did throw for 232 yards at Michigan JYeager, but also he threw for 3 picks, one of which was returned for a TD. He went 24-48, which is only 50% if you can calculate that statisitc.

Against USC? He went 22 of 45. If you actually watched the game, you'd know that most of the yards came in trash time.

So if your going to try and make me feel like an ****, please bring more then stats that generally don't tell the tale.

April 30, 2007  01:10 AM ET

Oh and I agree with you Dfung.

April 30, 2007  01:55 AM ET

I am a die hard cowboys fan, but Tony Romo did not finish the year wit any consistency, they needed a recevier so the move would have been smart if they had actually got a recevier not only with the 2nd round pick, but the intire draft instead of drafting no name players who will be lucky to make the squad, at least Quinn would have had a year to sit and watch before taking over the job at midseason when they had enough of Romo

April 30, 2007  09:20 AM ET

biglat said, "OK, did anyone watch Romo in the Pro Bowl when he had recivers that didn't drop the ball? That is exactly why they drafted Spencer in the First round and not Brady.... OH and the first round pick that they recieved from Cleveland probably top 10 next year..." I think that says it all right there. If Romo falters, we use that pick to get next year's Quinn (or better, I hope). If he doesn't [which I don't think he will] then we get a young stud at receiver or running back. And again, we had to use that 2nd-rounder to get back in the 1st to get Spencer - who, btw, was the player we wanted all along. Let's see, got who we targeted AND another #1 next year - maybe even a high #1? That seems like a good deal to me. Wishing that we would have gotten all that and still had that 2nd rd pick to get a receiver, that's just greedy.

April 30, 2007  10:21 AM ET

they passed because he isn't that good...

April 30, 2007  10:56 AM ET

picked or past not matters, they ain't going anywhere this year.

April 30, 2007  11:42 AM ET

They passed on him because he is not that good. The Cowboys will be lucky to go 8-8.

April 30, 2007  11:45 AM ET

Romo is severely overrated and should not have been voted to the Pro Bowl. He played a few good games and that's it. Teams will have him figured out. What the Cowboys should have drafted was a holder because Romo is a butterfingers and can't hold on to a snap!

April 30, 2007  01:42 PM ET

I agree that Romo ain't that great either...

April 30, 2007  02:47 PM ET

Romo is a good Qb, give him a full season to produce. Cowboys will dominate this yr, one weak area was D and they shored it up by taking Spencer and then getting Hamlin in free agency. 2 #1's next yr gives flexibility for a Super Bowl caliber team. Quinn is way overrated! Give me Brohm, Ainge, or Henne anyday
