07:02 AM ET 11.04 | Former Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle is expected to be named the Rangers hitting coach, three sources said Tuesday. Hurdle emerged from a group of four finalists that also included Thad Bosley, Gerald Perry and Rusty Greer, the sources said. Each interviewed Monday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

who is this guy? any good?

November 4, 2009  07:17 AM ET

He's the best choice. He did take a team to the WS as manager so he knows how to handle players.

I wish him well... we need him.

Washington better watch his back??

Absolutely, Wash better watch out! Having Clint Hurdle on board and getting familiar with the players makes for a smoother transition when Wash starts making those questionable baseball decisions again as he did last season. Deja vu- I do believe Hurdle went through the same process with the Rockies --- first the hitting coach and then slid over to manager when the time was right.

They could definately use a spark in thier hitting, at the end of the season their bats were as cold as a witch's **** lol

I wondered about that this morning.

Did they hire a hitting coach or a manager in waiting?

Clint's a solid hitting coach. The players all loved him so much after Don Baylor hired him for the Rockies back in 1998 that Jim Leyland and Buddy Bell both kept him on staff. Then, of course, Bell got fired, and Hurdle took over.

If this is a manager-in-waiting thing, though, the Rangers are crazy. Hurdle is not a good manager. He has a habit of trying to be the players' friend, then pissing them off, then benching star players for swinging at the first pitch, but not anyone else. Also, his bullpen management has always been atrocious.

Chief- dont blame him, blame the pitching coach

He was a career .260 hitter so I'm sure he gained more skills by sitting on the bench than being an everyday player. H eplayed like 500 some games I think. He didn't seem to be a bad manager, from afar. I'm surprised he hasn't been offered another shot. I wouldn't want him, I'm just shocked. Maybe he'll be a good hitting coach again.

He had 1 good year, due to his players going on that huge winning streak all the way to the World Series. Other than that the Rockies finished in the bottom 2 of the division in 5 of the 7 years he was there.

In other words, he's exactly the type of guy that people will say "just needs a change of scenery" to be successful.

That's easy to say, but Bob Apodaca's been remarkably successful as the Rockies pitching coach. He's had some serious retread success stories: Darren Oliver, Jeff Fassero, Shawn Estes, Jason Marquis, Josh Fogg...

Don't get me wrong, I think Clint Hurdle's a great guy and a great baseball guy, but he needs to be a hitting coach to be successful. Managing's not his forte.
