Should Cardinals sit Boldin?

I've written about Anquan Boldin's three Pro Bowl selections, his contract squabbles and his trade demands. But I've never typed these words about him: Bench him. Not because Boldin isn't producing but because he can't. A sprained right ankle has made him less than ordinary in recent weeks, and it's not likely to improve until Boldin takes time off. Telling Boldin to sit out Sunday's game in Chicago won't be easy. He's a proud, tough man who thinks he can help the Cardinals even if he's less than 100 percent. And he's already battling the notion that he's injury-prone, having played only two complete seasons in the NFL. If he chooses to deliver the news, coach Ken Whisenhunt might have to dig out his old football gear for protection, because Boldin's convinced that as long as he can move, he can help.

He is a stud... but he needs to rest. That ankle isn't going to get better until he does and Breaston can step up.

And besides - Bolden cannot help the team when Warner is out there throwing FOUR INT's...

Breaston is very well capable...

That seems to be the story of Warner's career...

He's had a great one, but he never haves two consecutive great seasons..

Drop the ego and get back to full strength.

Amen. I agree that he can still help the Cards, 100% or not. But they have good fill-ins, nobody that's gonna threaten Boldin's job either. He's gonna be needed for the playoff run, since every NFC West team is still "in it". I'd like to see him play it safe. Watching him and Fitzgerald in the playoffs again, torching secondaries, would be cool.

And it is against the BEARS!!! They have no pass rush and the secondary is even worse.. Larry can beat the Bears by himself.... rest him for the long run to the playoffs.

I'm sure Stafford has a different opinion about the Bears pass-rush. Then again, I don't think the Lions have what could be called a competent O-line. As for the Bears secondary, I'm not sure what their malfunction is. The same players used to be the best at take-aways. I think the Bears got rid of the wrong Ron.

Boldin should sit out. Playing hurt can only make the the ankle worse.

Like the MLB pitcher that hides arm problems. You're not helping the team!

November 4, 2009  10:19 AM ET

He needs to rest up, get better and then he can get back to playing @ 100% sooner...

November 4, 2009  10:24 AM ET

They're coming up on a weak part of the schedule, with Chicago, Seattle, St Louis, Tennessee - why not sit him and let him get healthy for a playoff run & the playoffs

Maybe he should take some of the big money he got and use it as padding. Let him rest it's not like the Cards are in a real competitive division. The whole team could sit out the month of November and still win the NFC West.

They are not the same players that used to get all of the take-aways. The only one left that is playing is Tillman. Vasher's a backup because of lack of production. He lost his job to 2nd year player Bowman. Mike Brown is gone, replaced by rookie Afalava. Manning moved from nickel to safety. This is just not as good of a group as they used to have. I think that the loss of Mike Brown hurt them the most. He was a leader and told the d-backs where to be constantly. Also, not having Urlacher to call in the plays is not helping any.

DONT BENCH HIM...TRADE HIM !

TRADE HIM TO THE MIAMI DOLPHINS !

November 4, 2009  06:16 PM ET

Its all up to coach Whiz, and he is such a wimp he has no guts to tell Q to sit it out, thats why the Cards will keep teasing there fans............they need a coach who can make tough decisions and be more disiplined

unless he has three consecutive great seasons like he did in 99, 2000, 2001

Seems like a proud guy, but this appears to be one of those situations where common sense needs to prevail, and he needs to let himself heal. There's no shame in resting if you come back off of it stronger and hungrier.

Mike Brown, when healthy, was a damn fine player and definitely a defensive leader. I agree that he was important when he was on the field, the issue was that he just couldn't stay on the field. They just had to make the decision to let him go and let someone else new come in and hope that he can stay healthy. I've seen a lot of Afalava, and he hasn't been too bad of a player. I can't speak for his abilities as a DB leader, but as a player he's been fine.

I wouldn't be so quick to write Chicago off. Granted they got absolutely embarassed, but Arizona themselves got whipped pretty good a couple of games last year too. The same team that got torched by Cincy is the same team that managed to beat Pittsburgh (a win at home with two missed field goals, but it's still a close game either way and a win is a win), Seahawks at Seattle before the injury bug really destroyed them, and played Green Bay tough at Lambeau despite 4 picks from Cutler. I don't think the team is a Super Bowl contender, but they certainly somewhere in the middle of the pack in the NFL. Admittedly this is a somewhat biased opinion though.

I also have to say they probably should sit Boldin. They have two other very capable receivers on the team, and I'm pretty sure it'd be more important to have Boldin in late December and January.
