Clausen clouds Notre Dame's future

The decision that will most impact the future of Notre Dame football will not be made by President John I. Jenkins, athletics director Jack Swarbrick, coach Charlie Weis or the small group of influential alumni who have served as behind-the-scenes power brokers in the not-so-distant past. The player whose right arm has been most responsible for Notre Dame's resurgence now holds the program's fate in his hands. What's significant about Dayne Crist's seemingly insignificant injury is that Jimmy Clausen will likely leave for the NFL after this season. If so, Weis will have to rely on an inexperienced sophomore coming off major surgery heading into a season in which the Irish were expected to compete for a national title.

Hey Jimmy,

We could use a good QB in Washington.

November 4, 2009  08:05 AM ET

And we'll pay even more than ND boosters.

compete for a national title? gimme a break...

Another Clausen/Dommer story. This should get some posts. Be nice to see Clausen stay but seems more often that staying around the extra year has been hurting their draft status.

If he gets an invite to NY for the the big trophy then he'll bolt for the NFL

Jimmy will leave and Weiss will pull a Pete Carroll he's not ready for the NFL (oh and my offense will struggle without him)

3 bills minimum on the posts.

I think the Chicago Sun Times went a little over the top in this article. Their point is basically if Claussen stays.....they'll make a run at the national championship and if he leaves......all is lost.

Journalists really have no scruples. They'll write just about anything to sell ad space.

Like it or not, they'll have one of the best O's in the country next year. In fact they do this year. Even if Jimmy doesn't come back, they'll have Tate and Floyd who are and again will be the best 2 WR combo in college and Rudolph who will most likely be a Mackey finalist this year and win it next year.

C'mon, we all know Weis is too egotistical to say his offense will struggle. Weis would take a nonchalent cheap shot, and say his offense will be fine.

I have to agree there. Unfortunately, with the hype Tate is getting, I have a feeling he may be leaving. If Clausen goes, he's definitely going. However, if Clausen stays, we will hands down have one of the best offenses in the country. Losing Floyd this year made a big difference. Not to mention, if Clausen stays, and depending on how we finish the season (including whatever crappy bowl game we're in), we have a chance to be ranked fairly high. Not to mention, that coupled with our easy schedule next year. It potentially could come down to the last game of the season vs. USC. If he stays, I think we have a good chance of playing in a BCS game, but I think it's way to early to say we're good to compete in the NC. With our easy schedule next year, it will really depend on 1. Our preseason ranking, 2. Who ahead of us loses, and 3. If we beat USC.

Dear Jimmy, if you hear ANYTHING about going to the Redskins, that alone should be enough incentive to stay another year....NC or not! ;)

You know him better than me and that sounds much more accurate.

I haven't read a word of Clausen leaving early...except in rumor mills like this one. I think the way this season goes will have alot to say about when and if Clausen goes to the pros.

Also...the kid has turf toe, which I'm sure will affect any combine he'd be apart of. Poor showing in a combine? Low projection, low draft, less money....one more year of college football. Although this may be too rational for a kid who announced his intent, by arriving in a limo to the NFL Hall of fame...

November 4, 2009  08:38 AM ET

'Jimmy Clausen will likely leave for the NFL after this season', is about as true as
'Notre Dame ducking a series with Miami', Whats more likely is 'Clausen leads the Irish in a Gator bowl victory over Miami this New Years day', and returns for his senior season.

Expected to compete for a national title? By who, Lou Holtz?
