No word on who will replace Tom Soehn as D.C. United coach but two names expected to be at the top of the list for consideration are current Red Bulls interim head coach Richie Williams and former Kansas City Wizards head coach Curt Onalfo. Former U.S. national team captain and D.C. United standout John Harkes is also expected to be in the mix.

If that gets Harkes off TV, I'm all for it. And all the reasons I want him off TV are why I think he'd be a terrible coach. I wouldn't want to play for someone who does very little other than criticize and offers few solutions.

No. No. And please god/allah/zeus/ra/odin/mother nature no. Get a real coach.... please!

If they are going to look at all of Arena's old assistants -- few of whom have done much on their own -- why not just bring back the real thing?

Lothar Matthaus is available after the Argentine financial crisis.

Does Lothar want anything to do with MLS after his first experience?

He would if they'd pay him. But we also should flip the parts of the question and ask if MLS wants anything to do with Lothar after the first experience.

Not a bad flip... We'd also have to wonder if he'd just up and leave whenever he had a mental turn of events.

All and all though, I'm all for bringing more Germans to the MLS as it is too heavy on the British influence...

i would like to see more former MLS players getting a shot... Armas strikes a cord... guy played assistant at Chicago... Though RSL is known for underperforming i really like Kreis as a coach.... i dislike Hamlett but he's getting the job done for chicago (and might be available if we dont move on saturday)....

Well that's a given. Lothar would only hang around for 3/4 of a season and then wait to take the Bayern job when it becomes available (which is soon, at this rate). Lothar dreams nightly of coaching Bayern, although I don't think he'll be offered that spot until the Rummenigge and Hoeness leadership were to completely turn over.

I disagree, we need some fresh minds, we need a new mentality in MLS, not only on tactics but on how young players are picked. For example, in MLS a young player is more likely to be chosen if he's fast and dynamic, rather than a little slower but a great passer, things like that...

Who's a consistently good college coach? The guy at Wake Forest? I think we've historically done well in MLS with former elite college coaches, eg, Arena, Bradley, Hyndman to an extent. They have the responsibility of a head position (as opposed to assistants), proven track records, constant experience with identifying talent to recruit, and experience with game management.

Everyone overlooks that Colin Clark did well with Dallas and has made PR into one of the best Carribean teams, one that takes MLS castoffs and beats teams like TFC in CONCACAF. Why go with some mediocrity or career assistant when someone like this could be had? MLS is becoming oddly insular.

Donadoni wouldn't be a bad option either.

No more Rick Steiner at DCU???? DAMMIT!!!!

any foreign coach with solid tactical thought process could be earning a better living elsewhere or will be too pricey for MOST MLS teams to afford....

we already saw the tactician fail at NJRB... understanding the league is what allows the coach to succeed in MLS.... foreign coaches have come and gone, they have left their stamp in MLS but overall, more often then not, its either College Coaches, former MLS players, connected with USSF or MLS assistant coaches that have truly succeeded in this league

the league needs to develop a sense of nationality.... picking a random foreign guy from a random team outside of the US fails more often then succeeds... Armas would be a solid coach... given he stuck it out with Fire for another season or 2 he might have gotten a job at another location..

a coach with no sense of what the league is about will most likely fail (or be mediocre)... there are rules and regulations in this league which would be unheard of elsewhere.... MLS is hard to adjust to if you have no idea of what its about

I've been saying this for a year. Why do you think I'm lamenting his depature from DCU? Although, Richie Williams looks like someone out of a movie but I cannot think of it. Definitely a bad guy, but I'm drawing a blank. Dare I waste three hours on IMDB???

Maybe former MLS players with foreing football experience? I'm talking about guys like Preki and now maybe Jorge Campos, don't you think they bring something new to the table? At least more refreshing than someone like Armas...

November 4, 2009  01:09 PM ET

Problem with John Harkes potentially getting the job is that ESPN might offer the opening to Max Bretos! HA.

Voice...good call on Colin Clark...granted I could care less what DCU does but offering Clark the job might improve the squad quickly. One would think DCU could win a few CONCACAF Champions League games as Clark has shown he can win a few of those.

yes, the Former foreign players in MLS would be a solid option...

you have no idea what type of coach Armas is... he's truly a player's coach... having a coach that the players respect and follow is important... seeing as you've never seen him coach i suspect your last sentence is strictly on his balls-to-the-wall playing style as a base of judgment on what type of coach he'd be...seems foolish to count someone out simply b/c of what type of player they were....

there is a saying that the best players do not make the best coaches... while Armas was a bullish type of destroyer mid, he did his job well... ive heard nothing but praise when it came to him as an assistant coach....

If Armas were to get a job anywhere with MLS, my money would be with Chicago, especially if they can't get a result against New England.
