Did Flames cut in line for H1N1 shots?

Contrary to the NHL's official stats, it turns out Jarome Iginla did get a shot over the weekend. An H1N1 flu shot. And because of it, the Flames captain and the bulk of his teammates are now feeling the wrath of someone even angrier than coach Brent Sutter: Joe Public. One day after the most intense, hard-hitting practice the Pengrowth Saddle-dome has seen in years, players and team officials faced a similar onslaught as newsies demanded answers as to how the Flames jumped the line. It's a fair question given the panic, fear, misinformation, disorganization and death stemming from the pandemic. However, no one with the Flames is to blame. While it was undoubtedly a poor public relations move, it wasn't a bad decision. By securing the vaccines, the club managed to best protect its most important assets. The difference being that while tens of thousands of lined up in the cold last Friday for up to eight hours, the club approached Alberta health officials on how their players could get inoculated without the rigors of lining up. Given the spotlight on these controversial clinics, the person with Alberta Health Services who gave the go-ahead is the one who should, and will, be thrown under the bus.

Who gives a crap? Swine flu is an overblown panic anyway.

This is a big deal in Alberta because they are on a big shortage.

Indeed! And while some poor sap gets canned for doing them "a favor" while the public waits their turn, these spoiled millionaires with huge egos and a sense of entitlement bypass the whole line up of mere mortals and go on their merry way. Unfair? You bet!

Standing in line is for suckers.

Or people like you and me.

I say it's a good thing. That way when the overhyped masses think they get sick at least they will be able to watch a hockey game.

If they did it in the states at a private clinic during a road trip then it wouldn't have been a big deal. The fact that they did it in Calgary when thousands wait in line for hours doesn't look good.

If the provincial gov't were smart then they would have doctors and nurses at the schools giving the shots to kids first. Also and adult that wanted a shot as well would have to produce Gov't issued ID to show that they were 'Seniors'. After that then the general population.

They need to be more organized in the way that they are doing it.

What are you talking about, making people wait out in the cold for a shot that is supposed to help them from getting sick isn't the best way to do it? Why don't they go outside and throw water on them too?

As always Hank a very good point. You always look out for the masses.

I meant gov'ts in general.
The whole process doesn't appear to be that well organized when they say that this group of people and this group of people are to get the shot 1st (kids/seniors)... but we are not going to turn anyone away...
That's the loophole in the system and that's what causing these long lineups...

November 4, 2009  10:55 AM ET

Merely a question of priorities - absolute no-brainer, eh.
But hey, if you wanted the 'doubtful portion' of the public to be interested in getting vaccinated, would there be a better way.

November 4, 2009  10:59 AM ET

If the Flames organization made a significant donation this issue means nothing, but if not then a lot of tough questions need to be asked like why would the province allow people who don't have permanent residence there jump ahead of permanent residences?? But this site is for sports not politics so, who cares, Screw U T&R.

Actually, you can drive up to O'Hare Airport here in Chicago, pay $35.00 and get your swine flue shot, just like that. No waiting lines if you go between about 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

November 4, 2009  11:08 AM ET

That's what you get when healthcare is run by a bureaucracy..... :)

November 4, 2009  11:08 AM ET

Special treatment for athletes abounds.

More than a few moons ago my son was on the waiting list for an MRI. It was a long list.

This was when Hongcouver had the NBA Grizzlies. They had just drafted Shareef Raheem and were concerned about the status of one of his knees. So he jumped line ups and space was found and presto!! He was signed to a big buck contract.

Nobody got up in arms over it, the waiting list didn't suddenly get shorter or move more quickly, my son still had to wait.

So I'm not going to start worrying about a few folks who 'might' get the flu, especially when the alternative might be no hockey?

I agree the H1N1 is overblown and seems like a money grab for the pharmacuticals, but there are thousands who take it pretty serious and are standing in line including elderly and small children. What the Flames and Alberta Health did was wrong and heads should roll over this decision.

After losing 3-2@Colorado and 3-1@home to Detroit it seems the only shots the Flames need are on goal.
