Serena Williams spent a productive week in Doha -- seizing the season-ending World No. 1 ranking and emerging as tennis first six million dollar woman. By winning the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships -- Doha 2009, Williams has set a new single-season prize money record for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour by earning $6,545,586. Williams has eclipsed the previous record set by Justine Henin in 2007 ($5,429,586). Prize money totals include Grand Slam prize money earned. "It's incredible how much women's tennis has grown in the last few years and that the Tour has increased our prize money so significantly," said Williams. "We are very fortunate to have an opportunity to be so well rewarded for doing something we love." Though Williams won only three titles this season, compared to the 10 championships Henin claimed in setting the previous prize-money record, each of the three -- the Australian Open, Wimbledon and Doha -- were among the most lucractive paydays in tennis.

"It's incredible how much women's tennis has grown in the last few years and that the Tour has increased our prize money so significantly. We are very fortunate to have an opportunity to be so well rewarded for doing something we love. And something we're so passionate about. Sometimes our passions get the best of us, and that's what happened with that iffy call. I wrote the line judge a really long letter of apology. But I also told her that if she ever again makes a call like that against me or my sister, I'll reach down her throat and rip her lungs out while shoving my raquet up her ***. And that's not because I'm violent or a psycho. It's because I'm passionate."

congrats to her...as always she only tried during the big cash events...those people who attend smaller WTA tourneys don't get to watch anywhere near the quality of tennis from her cause those tourney's aren't important enough for her to bother trying hard in, if they were important enough for her to even bother showing up to at all...

Hey Jimmer69...that goes for most of the top players...why risk injury on a lesser tournament? If you're gonna play 100%, you might as well do it for the big tournaments. Winning a smaller tournament does nothing for Serena or Venus's resume. You have to be smart enough to pick and chose your battles.

because giving any less than your all in every tourney is ripping off the fans who payed to see them...unless the fans aren't important...

I live near a small tourney venue in SC..2 years ago 100% of the "name" players dropped out before the tournament...and Charleston is not a bad place for Young people to hang....

That's weak leadership...or the Lindsay Lohan Effect...

I just noticed her arm...is that Eldrick in Drag?!?!??!

November 5, 2009  02:16 AM ET

She is obviously very successful financially and in terms of winning tennis matches.

However, it's too bad that all those millions of dollars was not able to buy character or help her treat people better.

Then again, maybe I underestimate the ultimate power of money. Maybe now that she has so much of it, she *may* actually start acting in a more respectful manner toward others.

GET OVER IT!!!! She's got tons of game and she's spoiled, and bratty. OOOOOhhhhhhhhh. Those are traits rare in the upper echilons of elite sports. As for how she treats lesser tournaments, even greats like Federer have been known to throw in less than 100% efforts at these tournaments. With so many of the top players complaining about the grueling schedule, is it any wonder that they (many of the top players) don't deliver their top performances in, say, South Carolina? If Nadal was less inclined to deliver 100% all of the time is there any doubt this would have a positive effect on his career? Moreover, during the years when Justine was sunning herself in Shangri-La, and Davenport and Clijsters were in baby-land, and Capriati was, wherever the heck she's been for the past several years, the Williams' sisters have single-handedly (especially given the crash of the future players such as Sharapova, Ivanovic, and Safina) carried the women's tour. SO YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GET THE HECK OFF THEIR BACKS CAUSE THEY CANNOT CARRY YOU AS WELL.

Georgie...

I could give a **** about the tournament in my neighborhood...the Williams sisters are wired like other athletes in contact sports...U need to realize that the problem with Women's Pink and Green sports(I have 5 daughters...4 of which are great athletes...My Step-Daughter is a princess) is that there are a legion of no name players schlepping around the world playing to dwindling audiences...who really cares about some argentinian tennis player ranked 215 in the world or the next great Korean "Babe" out of IMGA that has Zero personality and a "deadly 6 Iron".

And I disagree...Serena Williams can easily carry me and I'm 6'1 195....I love Both of them and wish they were my daughters...and I'm an old white guy...

@TedC44, well said. I agree with all of your points. But I still think the "sisters" do not receive nearly enough credit for carrying the women's tour. I cannot begin to explain how many viscious, racist rants I read almost daily about them. It's really sickening. But, for better or worse, they are American women's tennis and, in a larger sense, their saga represents the deep racials fissures of our country's past and present. I'm glad to hear an old white guy say he'd like them as his daughters, for surely, warts and all, they are amazing women and amazing athletes.

do they test female tennis players tof steroids and HGH? Both of the Williams sisters are built like men.
this "lady" showed her true colors while threatening to shove the tennis ball down the officials throat. total lack of class.

I think Serena is a man...

Well, you may be suspicious, but remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

Besides, Venus does not look like a man. She is tall, but definitely feminine. Serena, on the other hand, _does_ evoke suspicions with her build. As you mention, Serena also has the problem with the way she treats others, whereas Venus does not have any such issues.

No Warts...just strength and execution...in Tennis and Life...I just wish CC had stayed with Serena...think of the Kids!!!!

Their father was/is a freak but he navigated them out of Compton...more than can be said for alot of the absent "Hoop Dads" from that Zip Code...

Think of that tour without those 2...I'm sure some WASPO's in Greenwich would like too....more chances for their spoiled kids with the Kiawah Tans...

Chick's questionable no doubt about it...she does strike fear into most men out there. Imagine if she got you in a headlock with one of them arms.
