Twins-Brewers trade scenario

If the Twins can't re-sign free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera, it would be surprising if they don't consider Milwaukee's J.J. Hardy, who is expendable due to the emergence of Alcides Escobar. Lefty starter Glen Perkins would seem a likely bet to be included if there were an offer to the Brewers.

This seems like one of the most logical trades proposed in a long time. Hardy might do better in a different situation, and he seems just the Twins type of player. Plus Escobar is a stud and is going to take shortstop eventually no matter what, might as well get something for him now.

Hate to see JJ go but it is a necessary evil. As long as this Perkins isn't a gas can ...

November 5, 2009  11:57 AM ET

Perkins gets hit to the tune of .300+ opponents BA. The problem for the Brewers is that they have no leverage since everyone knows their shortstop of the future is ready now.

November 5, 2009  12:23 PM ET

Hardy has been an All-Star; that's some leverage. The Crew doesn't have to deal him for the first pitcher on the table.

Why not think bigger? Perhaps package him in a deal for someone like Roy Halladay.

Perkins wouldn't be everything they got...I'm sure the Twins would part with one of their good outfield prospects as well, if they could get Hardy. Perkins isn't bad though, he's young and pitches to contact, that's all.

May be a good trade, but consider the source. Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press is a big blowhard who thinks he's on the "in" with every team in Minnesota. The true beat writers from the media outlets who actually cover the Twins, Vikings, Wild, etc... Constantly refute his rumors both in his own paper and on sports talk radio. The only thing Charley Walters wants to be is the next Sid Hartman, who also is not a reliable source of information. Every time T&R posts a rumor from St. Paul Pioneer Press assume it is not true unless verified by another source.

Brewers take Perkins, Gomez and Tolbert. Twins take Hardy

November 5, 2009  01:50 PM ET

WTF - a baseball item NOT about Wankees or BloSox? Are MINN or MILW in MLB ;)

November 5, 2009  04:06 PM ET

I agree with xbud99, just because it was published by the Pioneer Press doesn't mean that there is a trace of truth to it.

Someone should take a flyer on Hardy. He's very capable of .280 w/25hr offensive stats and is a decent fielder.

They're not giving up on 'Go-Go' Gomez yet, Gardy loves his speed and defense too much. However, being a Twins fans with family in Milwaukee and regularly going to a few Brew Crew games every year, I would like to see Hardy in the TC.

Gomez should have started his Twins career in Double or Triple A...IF he every becomes a serviceable MLB player, it'll be right before or right after he becomes a FA...Span, Cuddy and Gomez have earned their spot, Gomez SHOULD be gone...likely won't be, but should. Offensively, he's getting worse...

are you cazy???? Hardy can't hold the jock strap Roy wears....you would need to add someone like Fielder to make that work.

yup...Smith overplayed his hand...should have taken one of the Boston offers...or kept Santanauntil his contract left and collected the draft picks...

Twins get Hardy...and didn't give up anything to get him. Gomez...don't let the door hit you in the A#$ on the way out. very very bad hitter. wouldn't make a lot of AA rosters. sorry . but it's true. i would like the idea of keeping Cabrera at SS and trying Hardy at third. now we just need a second baseman with some pop. Tolbert, Punto, Casilla are not the answer here. i'm not sure who might be out there but that will be the offseason priority position. Span, Cabrera, Mauer, Cuddyer, Morneau, Kubel, Young, Hardy, 2B. Not a bad lineup.

Indeed, I stand corrected. I will say though I am a fan of this trade.
