Matsui's last hurrah as Yankee?

Hideki Matsui would love to keep his pinstripes and return to defend the championship that he, more than anyone else, delivered for the Yankees Wednesday night with a game that lived up to his nickname of Godzilla. He just may not have a say in the matter. For weeks, even months, there have been whispers around the Yankees that there is no way the ballclub will bring back both Matsui and Johnny Damon, each of whose four-year contract is expiring. GM Brian Cashman has made no secret of wanting to get younger overall, while also acknowledging a possible need to spread the use of the DH spot around, especially with catcher Jorge Posada turning 39 next season and Alex Rodriguez perhaps needing further hip surgery this offseason.

the Yankees are made of $$$$......they should keep them all

I can see letting Damon go but Matsui provides lefty power and can come off the bench...he's also a proven postseason hitter, something the Yankees obviously needed in these playoffs. I agree with getting younger but I believe in keeping your core guys, especially if those guys are reliable...

Congratulations to the Yankees and their fans. Its been clear to me since June that they were the best team this year.

Godzilla, thanks for 7 great seasons. U started with a bang and ended with a bang but its either you or Damon back next year. The DH needs to be for Posada next year as Cervelli and Montero work in as catcher. So, the nod goes to Damon on a small contract for one or two years as we wait for Jackson

Another Yankees victory.. hip hip hooray!

Well, congratulations to the Yankees and their fans! It was a good run and they really handled the reigning world champions with relative ease.

As some of you may know, I was pulling for the Yankees for a triumvirate of reasons. However, now that the season's over and the Yankees have taken the title, I'd like to take this moment to say: the Yankees can go **** themselves.

The first at bat Matsui had in that game was amazing!!

Congratulations to all the Yankee Fans.

Thanks Slink, we wouldn't want it any other way.

Much as it pains me as a Red Sox fan, you have to hand it to the Yanks. They were clearly the best team in baseball this year, and deserved to win it all. Congrats Yankee fans...hope the hangovers aren't too bad today. See ya in April.

APRIL???

Spring Training opens WAY before then.........

November 5, 2009  07:45 AM ET

Who gives a shyte about spring training? NY could sweep in Feb/March...won't matter a bit to me. Just as long as we start winning on April 5.

Thanks, all. Feels great. And my 10-yr. old is thrilled with his first conscious championship!

November 5, 2009  07:50 AM ET

Tough call on Matsui vs. Damon, if that's the case. This week was like audition, and I can't figure out who won.

Yes it was...

Good morning all.

I offered congratulations earlier this morning on yesterday's thread, along with Trixi, but wanted to say it again here. Congratulations to the Yankees for being the best team this year. There's no doubt that they deserve the honor ... and, it's going to be a very long year. :P

Countdown to Spring Training begins NOW!!! :)

Damon is a gamer for sure, but after that play where Matsui broke his wrist...and stayed with the play with his hand dangling at that godawful angle...I'd take him in a second. That's some serious stones there!

I wonder what avatar becca will be sporting for the next week.

Didnt she say she had like 4 bets going? We might not recognize her for some time to come.
