The Phillies have not yet decided whether to offer a contract extension to pitcher Cliff Lee this off-season, but they have discussed the possibility internally.

Good luck with that. He's said he's going to test the market many times.

November 5, 2009  07:06 AM ET

Uh oh for philly I guess. Maybe the Royals will take a crack at him.

The Royals?

Exactly. If he has another season like the last two -- or, really, anywhere near -- he's going to get Santana/Sabathia money, which is somewhere around $150m. While the Phillies have done a nice job developing a core of guys and extending them before their free-agent eligibility, this will be a different game all together. $150m is 76% larger than Utley's which is the largest contract on the Phillies.

As the Cheesy Texan said, I expect to see one of the heavy-hitters come in and scoop Lee up for 2011. It's the MLB way.

You would think the Phils would at least try to lock him up before he hits the market. Just shocking that they actually talked about it internally (sarcasm button on)

November 5, 2009  08:32 AM ET

sure...let Lee go and go into next year with a rotation of Pedro, Hamels, Happ, Blanton and Moyer....good luck with that.

with Lee...you lock him up....you already gave away a ton of prospects for him.

November 5, 2009  08:41 AM ET

lee is under contract for next year... they are talking about extending it further than that.

thanks for clarifying that...i'm too lazy and stupid to read the details...but they better sign him.

November 5, 2009  09:10 AM ET

they can not let this guy go

November 5, 2009  09:15 AM ET

They should trade him for quality prospects. He's not going to stay past next year and then they'll have nothing in exchange when he leaves.

November 5, 2009  09:15 AM ET

If they let him go it will be the biggest mistake there could be in MLB history.

November 5, 2009  09:17 AM ET

They can't keep everyone. I'd love to keep Lee around, but not if it means we can't keep guys like Werth, Feliz, and Victorino long term.

November 5, 2009  09:34 AM ET

Yeah i wouldnt want to lock this guy up either. Alls he did was win both his WS starts, plus all of his other postseason start. They extended Hamels after he did such a thing and he sucks now. Cliff Lee has a Cy Young award and trac record to back him up.

November 5, 2009  09:40 AM ET

They'd be stupid not to, that's for sure.

November 5, 2009  09:41 AM ET

Have to sign him, the Phillies can afford it and they need an ace pitcher.

November 5, 2009  09:44 AM ET

this guy was lights out....big game pitcher. ideally the phillies make a lot of sense but if lee is wanting to test the market and get the most he can get then philly might be able to pick up some very good prospects in a trade scenario before the conclusion of his contract. i just find that a little funny since philly is built to win now with the addition of some starting pitching

November 5, 2009  09:44 AM ET

Luckily Amaro is a bit smarter than Ed Wade was. Just depends on what kind of money Lee will be asking for. Myers is gone, and probably Pedro, also. Lee is an ace, and if Hamels can recover next year we'll have a nice 1-2 punch. Happ and Blanton are pretty good. So we'll still need to pick up another decent starter or try out Carasco(?). Need more bullpen and some bench players. Maybe some of the prospects can come up next year and work the bench? Lidge is a freakin' enigma. One good year, one bad year, one great year, one awful year. Congrats to the Yankees, you outplayed the Phils... this year.

November 5, 2009  09:45 AM ET

If they Phillies are going to make an offer to Lee it has to be similar to what CC got with the Yanks. Lee has shown that he can win games in both the regular season and now the playoffs. I think he is going after a contract in the $160 mil range and I am sure that both the Yanks and Boston would offer this to him.

Especially the Yanks because they have Andy coming off the books next year and if they had a starting rotation with CC, Lee and AJ that would be unstoppable come playoffs.

I would really like for Philly to keep him! As an Indians fan it was very hard to see both him and CC go. When you have a solid Ace and your team is setup to win now and has young solid pitching prospects already, Why let him test the market?
I really hope he stays because watching him leave sucks and I wouldn't wish this on any team........well maybe the Yanks and the Sox!
