Georgia AD backs Richt

Georgia athletics director Damon Evans said Wednesday that the stormy reaction of UGA fans to the Bulldogs' 4-4 record is "understandable" but expressed confidence that coach Mark Richt "will lead us through this adversity." Evans echoed Richt's position that the appropriate course of action at this point is to focus on each remaining game -- not on fans' calls for changes to Richt's staff.

Has Mark Richt won the majority of his games with Jim Donnan's recruits or his own recruits?

I can't recall how long he's been head coach between The Hedges.

November 5, 2009  07:20 AM ET

It's been pretty even - his best year was his second year (13-1), but he's won: 8, 13, 11, 10, 10, 9, 11, 10 - and now this down year. I think UGA fans are silly to call for his head just now. He's the most successful coach they've had in a LONG time. Change some coordinators, maybe, but don't abandon a guy because of a 4-4 start when he was 21-5 the previous two years.

But, hey, they are Georgia fans - they've never had a good grasp on reality...

Richt has been there since 2001. Donnan was run out of town by Adams (former UGA prez) b/c he lost to GA Tech 3 times in a row and had two consecutive seasons of 8 wins....oh, and I might add that Donnan was dismissed against the wishes of Vince Dooley, AD at the time.

Okay...

... thanks for the recent breakdown.

I remember the 1997 and 1998 teams Donnan coached and all the guys that went to the NFL (Champ Bailey, Olandis Gary, Robert Edwards, Hines Ward, Quincy Carter, Marcus Stroud, Richard Seymour, etc.) and thought Donnan must have been an excellent recruiter.

So, wasn't sure if Richt was riding the wave of Donnan's talent or not.

No problem. Personally, I thought Donnan was a good coach but the AD felt that you shouldn't lose to Tech that many times I guess....but a rather flimsy excuse to fire a guy who had a 41-19 record. The Richt situation is eerily similar....we'll see what happens.

I've tried to tell my fellow Dawg fans who are complaining about Richt that the grass isn't always greener with a new coach.....just look at Rich Rodriguez.

Richt IMO shouldnt be on the hot seat yet... He needs to get rid of Martinez and go from there... UGA have to much talent to be 4-4 though...

UGA fans, will they bench Cox and go with the youngs for the rest of the year.. To get ready for next year

Agreed about Richt....and Martinez; Bobo's play-calling isn't spectacular, but I don't think they will dismiss him.
Highly unlikely that anyone other than Cox or Gray will get the snaps for the rest of the year. Murray and Mettenberger apparently haven't shown Richt anything special in practice to make him want to switch it up right now.

Recruit better and no one has to back you up. Screw moral support just win games you are paid enough. Don't win enough take a hike you are still rich t.

And Murray is redshirted so I'm sure Richt isn't going to sacrifice that for this lost season. I'll admit that I don't know that much about Mettenberger.

I still say this guy and Meyer look like brothers.

I thought Rodriguez was a bad fit for Michigan...

... Rich was better suited to a second tier type football school (no offense to WV) than a traditional power like Michigan.

The Wolverines would have been better served to go after an established pro-style type of coach, that runs the ball.

I think coaches like Rodriguez and Beamer can excel at second tier schools where you need to utilize more gimmicky type plays to compensate for not always having the bigger, stronger team.

At schools like Michigan, Alabama, USC, and traditional powers, you usually don't need to rely on gimmicks... just execute and keep it simple.

I already like this thread.

Meyer looks just like Alan Thicke...

... who's son is more famous than his father now due to his singing.

Given the record he has posted, he shouldnt be on the hot seat... all they have to do is swat the bees at the end of the season and all will be forgiven from the fan base

Too bad for Richt that's about as likely as them winning the SEC right now (in other words, it's not going to happen).

November 5, 2009  09:42 AM ET

Richt is one of the best coaches in the country and any team would be lucky to have him, one bad season is nothing in context to his record.

November 5, 2009  09:55 AM ET

At Richt's current average of annual wins, he would reach Bowden & Paterno like numbers faster than they did. You can't name but a hand full of coaches in the entire country who are more respectable and successful than Richt. This is just rumbling by ignorant fans. People that know the game, know that Georgia has a life long coach if their smart enough to keep him.

A very reasonable way to look at it.
I do think Richt's loyalty to less-than-competent assistants is eerily similar to a recent coach here in Knoxville, though.
(That said, y'all should keep Martinez forever.)

Oh, I'm sure they aren't offended. (cough cough)

Mark will be around next year, and that will determine if he is officially on the hot seat. I have not heard and Georgia fans complain about him, and that is usually the first indicator...
