TaylorMade, USGA at odds over wedges

TaylorMade's TP wedges with xFT (exchangeable face technology) have hit a speed bump. Although the U.S. Golf Association has approved the wedges, it has told TaylorMade not to sell interchangeable faces with aggressive U grooves. Faces with smaller grooves that meet 2010 PGA Tour specifications are OK, according to the USGA, but faces with larger grooves are not. TaylorMade immediately appealed the USGA decision, and chief technical officer Benoit Vincent traveled to USGA headquarters in Far Hills, N.J., in October to present his case. Vincent said he would discuss the wedges after Nov. 9, when a ruling on the appeal is expected. The wedges, from 50 to 64 degrees, are scheduled for release early next year. A face plate can be removed and replaced in a few minutes, using the same torque wrench designed for TaylorMade drivers.

Sounds like Taylor Made stole the Spin Dr RI wedges design...

Spin the ball, the 2nd greatest myth to achieving lower scores, right behind hitting your drive 300 yards.

Agreed. Hit your chips close and make putts

Well it's a myth for average players but not for tour players, although it can be pretty risky to try to spin it back to the hole. Gotta have precise distance control for that. What's more useful is to use the spin to stop the ball. Again, I'm talking about tour players. I personally couldn't spin a ball if I put sandpaper on my club.

BINGO!..................although easier said then done.

Agreed! Unless you can control the spin on the ball then hitting a wedge pin high only to have it back up 10ft. may look cool but won't help lower your score.

Good putting will always cover a multitude of sins.
For 9 outta 10 golfers the putter will always be the least expensive club in the bag but 10 outta 10 times it's the one club everyone uses the most. While the driver usually remains the most expensive club we only use it 11-14 times round.

Hence, drive for show, putt for dough.........but face it, America's obsession with hitting the long ball will never be quenched!

Ummm.... Wedges are less expensive than putters... And ****... I've got some scotty's and bettinardi's that we're $$$$$$$$

I completely agree with you wings, but you will make more putts if you are hitting wedges into greens rather than 6 irons...

from an amateur stand point of view, yes i would agree with you but statistically speaking the PGA tour says "not so fast"...........Robert Garrigus leads the tour in driving distance (312yd) and is 3rd on tour in G.I.R and yet you'd have to wiki his name to find out more about him.

John Senden is first in G.I.R(70%) on tour and 25th in driving distance(294yd),John who?, need i say more?

Pat Perez, Matt Kuchar,Paddy Harrington, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Brian Gay, Luke Donald, Geoff Ogilvy and some guy name Tiger all have a couple things in common( you know where i'm going with this)

.........All these guys are either winners or multiple winners on tour this year or recognized as the games elite. One other thing, they're also statistically ranked in the top 25 in putts per round.

IMHO no quicker way to shave strokes off your game than becoming a better putter.

Taylor Maid deserves the wedgie-of-alltime - metal-shmetal - tink, tink, shmock-schlock! Yeah, and I didn't buy any stock in them, either... Dammmmmm!

It's na goff n'more, Laddy.

I'd be interested in their cup proximity for those putts...that would tell u alot about accuracy and quality wedge issues...even the guys with slight builds hit it 285-290...

November 5, 2009  08:41 PM ET

Rory looks like "Probie" on NCSI...

November 5, 2009  10:28 PM ET

Those damn wedges, they the root of all evil.

here are the top players who have the best proximity average on tour after their wedge shot comes to rest and i'll also include their rank in putts per round.

1. Tim Clark(30'5") ranked 30th in putts per round
2. Jason Bohn(31'1") ranked 160th in putts per round
3. Tom Lehman(31'8") ranked 188th in putts per round, dead last.
3. Jay Williamson(31'8") ranked 186th in putts per round
5. Joe Durant (31'11") ranked 185th in putts per round, also Joe leads the Tour in driving accuracy and is 2nd in Greens in regulation.

Robert Garrigus's proximity to the hole is 46th at 34'4" and 151st in putts per round.
John Senden's proximity to the hole is 51st at 34'6" and 170th in putts per round.

Who has the worst proximity to the hole? Brad Faxon at 40'2" but interestingly enough is #1 in putts per round, go figure!

November 6, 2009  12:15 AM ET

.........The bottom line is all the above (with the exception of Faxon) are the Tours top ranked wedge players and yet all of them except Clark and Faxon can't putt. And poor Joe Durant, if only he could putt.

November 7, 2009  09:16 AM ET

i had no idea that sabbatini's nickname was wedgey!

November 8, 2009  07:56 AM ET

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with goff.
