Scott threatens Hornets starters

Whenever New Orleans Hornets Coach Byron Scott sees his team sputtering, he goes into his bag of motivational tactics to try to break the slide. Before playing the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, Scott questioned if his players were afraid to carryover the way they execute at practice into games, because he was not seeing it. He also threatened to make lineup changes if some starters did not show improvement.

Whatever he said, it worked. So he may want to make sure he has plenty of motivational tactics up his sleeve. Seems like they're going to need it for the rest of the season.

Is it just me, or does it feel like this team has been out of synch ever since Tyson Chandler left?

This team was once and up an coming team 3 seasons ago and now their window has closed. The only NBA players on that team are West, CP3, and Okafur. The rest of the team is made up of a bunch of 8 to 10 bench guys.

They weren't very good with him either.

Taking a look at the roster, they have the best pg in the game, a decent pf and not much else. If they make the playoffs that is an accomplishment.

Okafor is ok but pretty average offensively. West seems to have hit his peak and teams aren't giving him that little elbow jumper anymore - although he had ten against the Mavs in OT he doesn't board like a pf should.

Peja is aging, Mo Pete is just a face in the crowd. Posey has done nothing this year. Collison doesn't seem ready to contribute at an NBA level yet. I like Songalia...but is a 8-9th off the bench at best.

I think most teams are made up that way. You've got one or two main guys, then the rest of them are 'plug-n-play.'

Agree with you there. However, at least back then, you could tell the team wnated to win and they'd compete night in at and night out.

Right now, it looks like they're just mailing it in...

Was the win an accomplishment triggerd by Scott's motivational skills?
When you think about it, I cant see the affect he had on Berrea and Terry who missed
the last 4 FT in the 4th Q, which would easily have given Dallas the win in Regulation.

lol....but CP is arguably a top 7 player in the league
West is a solid AS player and Ok is a nice #3 player....
They're problem has been that Peja & mopete are OLD
and have been hurt....if they can upgrade at even
one of those spots- they'd be formidable

Scott is going to get fired which is great because it will free him up to take over for Phil in LA.

November 6, 2009  09:04 AM ET

Also, everyone is looking at LBJ, Bosh, Wade etc. I don't see Chris Paul remaining in NO too much longer. They will either trade him, or he will leave on the first free agent train smoking.

Not a bad scenario ! The Hornets get to blame their coach as the scapegoat, and Byron - who is not a bad coach - gets a better opportunity with his alma mater team.

November 6, 2009  09:10 AM ET

The Hornets are a decent team, but the Western Conference continues to have some highly stacked teams, making it impossible for all the good teams to win as much as they "deserve" to.

Beyond the contenders - Lakers and Spurs - there are several highly motivated and talented teams out there - Blazers, Nuggets, Jazz, Suns, Mavs, Rockets, and Hornets. Any of these seven teams can beat any other (of the seven) based on matchups, grudges, and simply which team is having a better day.

Agreed, he's not sticking around. Unless Stern gets involved...

they should have kept tyson...this messes up chemistry

it didnt work as well as you think. They won the game, but only because the jet and the back up pg(cant think of his name....the lil PR guy) missed 4 out of 5 freethrows in the last 30 seconds. other than that....NO was done, but I guess thats part of the game.

Lets get one thing straight.....Scott should not and will not ever be the coach of the LA Lakers!

I knida agree...CP3 is fighting an uphill battle getting this team into the playoffs this year...Without Tyson, the league doesn't fear them defensively anymore....Combined with an Owner that wants to run the team like a Family Dollar, this team will be lucky to be an 8th spot come playoff time...If CP3 gets injured, they are a lottery team...

well I don't agree on that one...When you have a penny pinching owner, a challenged city and a lot of scrubs, and been able to accomplish what he has done with this team, he is worthy of consideration for another coaching gig after this...Lakers? who knows, but I do know he will be a marketable item after NO...

I agree with you. I am not sure Scott has the skills to handle those star egos. Can he get the respect without having accomplished much as a coach?

From what I hear Kobe seems to like Brian Shaw as the next Lakers coach, if Scott keeps them winning he'll have no problems.

You cant trade away Chandler for Okafor, trade Rasual Butler who as the most consistent shooter other than Paul and West and expect to win as many games as they did three seasons ago.
Then Peja is on the rising down of his career.
Bench production still is weak with the likes of Hilton Armstrong who has not yet developed, ike diogou who still a bust and a variety of rookies.
Shockingly the so called best point guard in the league has not demanded a trade.
Even Rondo said he is better than him and he has a ring and Paul does not.
LMAO!
