Phillies in market for free agents?

07:28 AM ET 11.06 | Charlie Manuel has been hesitant to remove Jimmy Rollins or Chase Utley from the Phillies lineup, he said recently, because he does not have a capable backup. That was a tacit indictment of Eric Bruntlett, the versatile defender who struggles offensively. Two members of this winter's free agent class would fit the need for an upgrade over Bruntlett, who will likely not return: Mark DeRosa of the St. Louis Cardinals and Marco Scutaro of the Toronto Blue Jays. DeRosa could also spell Raul Ibanez in left field. It is challenging, though, to sign free agents without promising a starting job, and the Phils would have to pay well lure a top role player.

You better be signing a starter or two. You're wasting one of the best lineups in baseball.

I think by missing the World Series by a couple games, they still don't need anything. So to phrase this as a question is ignorant sports writing.

DeRosa would be a capable backup for Utley, but I don't think the Cards will let him go....CardsFan2, any thoughts on that?

Bring up someone from the Lakeland organization.

They need to worry about extending Lee, because without him that rotation is suspect at best.

We'll try to sign him, but we're not going to overpay.

He's a good player, but he's still primarily a utility player. Our primary need is a corner outfielder with Holliday gone. Yes, he's gone because someone will overpay for him with the weak free agent market.

We also need to sign Pineiro who is a free agent and running under the radar at this point.

He's under contract either way for next year.

How long did it take Big Papi to recover from that wrist surgery? Derosa will be coming off wrist surgery.

They need to know where their money is going to be tied up before diving into the FA market and contracting themselves out of Lee's depth, because he's not going to be had for a song.

Do you know of some team that has players who play for free? then ****.

there enlies the problem. depends on what Lee sees this team doing over the next few years, and how much that matters to him. Blanton and Happ are decent mid-rotation pitchers. IF, and that is a BIG IF, Hamels 2009 season was actually a fluke, this season has a solid top-4 rotation, with the 5 spot open for options. There's talk of Drabek coming up also.

Lee is going to be expensive to keep, i think. i HOPE they can... i really do.

but they need new bench players to replace Bruntlett and Stairs. Neither produce off of the bench enough to make them worth keeping. Dobbs had a less than decent season, but he's typically reliable for what he's on the team to do.

November 6, 2009  10:06 AM ET

i also wouldn't mind them shopping a third baseman who actually has some kind of regular production behind the plate. even if it's a sacrifice every few games. but, only one of close to equal defensive skill.

It will be interesting to see how the Phillies off season moves will put them in a better place to retain the services with Cliff Lee. They will need to show him that winning is first and foremost to them but they will need to win to keep him.
They are going to have a tough decision to make with Lee, Do they ride him out in 2010 in hopes he stays with them or do they trade him to the bidder with the best prospects and hope Hammels and the others can step up?
I guess time will tell.

how do you figure? Lee was just as good a pick-up. im not sure of Halliday's ability to go on 3-days rest, but aside from that we'd have been no better off.

our issue was mid-bottom rotation, in particular COLE HAMELS.

i just hope this was a fluke year, like everyone was saying.

I agree with 99% of the comments on this post.

- Lee would be a great sign, If anyone can do it, it's Amaro.
- This was PROBABLY a fluke year for Hamels. When he returns to form he pitches like an ace. Time will tell.
- Happ shows signs of pitching like a top of the rotation guy as well. If he comes back next year, pitching like he did this year, it will be a HUGE BOOST to the rotqtion.
- If Blanton is te Phillies 4 or 5 guy, then we're set. He's consistent, goes deep in games and pitches all his starts.
- If Drabek is ready to be the 5 guy cool. If not do they ley Moyer fill it? Maybe resign Myers? I think he still has god years left in him, am i being nostalgic?

good years... not god

he is but you cant pretend he doesnt exist when you're looking at free agents for 2010. they're better off extending maybe the best pitcher in the NL now and seeing what they can do with whatever money they have left to spend, its not like they need major changes they were just two wins away from their second consecutive world series championship.
