Columbus and Franklin County officials say they won't spend sales- or income-tax dollars to bail out the Blue Jackets or buy Nationwide Arena. But they concurred yesterday with a report commissioned by the Columbus Chamber: Government must help keep the National Hockey League franchise in town and the Arena District thriving.

Well... they've already got The Jets uniforms, and, they're even in the right conference - jest change the Logos, and... Bob's yer Uncle - or in this case lil' Davey.

If the city doesnt realize that the Blue Jackets are boosting the local economy I don't think we stand a chance here in Columbus. I have gone to many games in Nationwide arena and so have many other fans from different cities. When we leave everyone always says how much fun the games are and how awesome the arena is. I will support a tax to bail out this team because its not just the team but all the businesses that are thriving on game nights!

Dump salaries, like Nash, just give him to Toronto.

Another small market team having money issues in the NHL sad.

Sad but not surprising. The novelty is wearing off on some of gary's ventures. Its too bad since they are building a good team and the fan base seems knowledgeable and into the game.

Move them to Kelowna. The Okanagan could support them.

"Columbus may not bail out Jackets"

I'd let the hideous midget bail them out like he did Phoenix!

The hideous midget owning every failing expansion team would be my wet dream come true!

By "hideous midget", you mean the NHL. That would be great. Just one more issue that will loom as the CBA expires next year..........lets enjoy the hockey teams we have while we still have hockey.

Another franchise bleeding money. Oh well.

I'd like to see Columbus survive I like their team mgmt and coaches. A couple of playoff series makes that 12 mill loss go away pretty quick and helps with the gate during the regular season. I think Detroit is going on a bit of a slide and who knows what's going to happen in Chicago next year. Columbus could start to conted for the Cenrtral Division lead. Of course the stars have to be aligned pretty good for all this to happen. Of the teams on the edge I think Columbus has the best chance for survival.

When they picked Columbus I scratched my head- they have to compete with Osu the first 3-4 months of the season. Then when they picked there name I had to look up why. Glad they went with something historical but no one can relate to it. Example blackhawk is historical. Everyone that doesn't know the history they relate it to Indians.
Third they put them in the west where there on east coast time.
Their fans are pretty cool and seem to travel well. The team us up and coming with Nash, mason and others.
If I was the NHL or, part of the bj ownership, I might look at putting these guys in the east before I relocate them. They should have gone with a catchier name as blue jackets makes me think of Georgia tech or the ny rangers not union soldiers. ( Of coarse they could be called the Columbus bj's and might get more fans.)

Anyone know how badly the wings are hurting finacially? I went to a game at the joe last year vs Columbus. It was weekend and the place was barely over 1/2 full. 1/3 of the crowd was bj fans ( and bj's won 10-4) the taxi driver said that since the big three fell (autos) Detroit is a ghost town and the wings were selling tickets below half price. We sat behind the sin bin one row behind the glass for $100 a seat. In Chicago those seats were 300+). It's not just the small markets that are hurting. They need to get a better marketing for the NHL. Remove bettman and replace him- see what pul tagliabu (former NFL comish) or ask John mcdonough (blackhawks pres). Yes these two don't know squat about hockey but they do know how to market sports.

I agree that Columbus should have been part of the East, It really makes no sense when you see other leagues that have cities in the same vacinity in the East?? I think the Blue Jackets are going to work everything out because too many businesses rely on them. If you have not been to a game I highly recommend going. I have been to many arena's around the country and Nationwide is by far the best. The bars in the Arena distict are really cool and in two years there will be a casino a stones throw from the rink.

Casino! Wow hope the hawks make a package trip out there.

The hideous midget Is the NHL. He's remade the entire league into his image. Now, they're... you know .... midget like.

November 6, 2009  03:37 PM ET

wow they cant afford a hickey only arena.

hockey

RE: CBJ should be in the Eastern Conference.

There are 17 NHL teams in the Eastern time zone, 13 NHL teams in the Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones combined. Obviously, there had to be conference balance, so two teams from the East had to be grouped with the West. Detroit & Columbus were to two most-West towns in the East. Case closed.

If the NHL expands or relocates teams, Columbus & Detroit could and probably would get moved to the East.

Okay, let's review:

T&R has a Phil Kessel rumor. Is this required or something?

Okay now that is out of the way, onto the real stuff:

1) Phoenix is now owned by the league = Team in trouble.
2) Columbus won't be bailed out by the city = Team in trouble.
3) Atlanta refuses to support the Thrashers = Team in trouble.
4) Tampa Bay is always in the news for troubles = Noticing a trend.
5) NY Islanders = Blah Blah Blah.
6) Nashville has been rumored to go to other cities.

If I really think about it longer, I can probably add four more teams. The NHL HAS to see this trend. Other than the Islanders, these teams are all in relatively new markets (Tampa has been around since the early 90s). These markets don't care. For 13 years, Phoenix has LOST money. These other teams are struggling. This is a fifth of the league! Get them in markets where they can survive OR fold them. There is at least three Canadian markets that will take them. (Winnipeg, Quebec City, and Hamilton)

Come on NHL wake up and fire the little troll before you have NO teams.
