Pettitte's future unclear

Andy Pettitte's decision over whether to return for a 16th major league season or retire will come down to his two families -- his own and the Yankees. Pettitte has been through this to-be-determined situation before and each time he has chosen to continue to pitch. The 37-year-old is eligible for free agency and he's not certain whether he'll be back. "I need to get home and talk to my family," Pettitte said after winning Game 6 to capture his fifth World Series ring. "I'll need to talk to the Yankees and find out where they're at and then I'll try to figure out what I'd like to do."

He's pitching for the Yanks next year. They'll dance a while then ink the deal.

Is he going to be like big brother Bob? Get a haircut and get a real job.

My guess would be that if the Yankee$ back up the $$Truck, it would be for a much younger pitcher.

Class Act. I hope he does what is best for him.

I hope the Yankees do the right thing by him for the same reason. They weren't exactly benevolent when he went to Houston, and they need him very much next year.

Well in the end he seems to have the least issues during the year. Sign him

1) Sabathia 2) Burnett 3) Wang??? 4) Hughes?? 5) Joba??

Those are some pretty big question marks filling out 60% of the rotation. With a fairly weak group of free agent pitchers out there this year, I think that the Yankees need to bring back Pettitte for some stability and insurance.

It's going to be an interesting offseason for Brian Cashman. I don't think that anyone expects the Yankees to be a tremendously big player in the free agent market, but what they do with their current players (Damon, Matsui, Pettitte, Wang, Nady) is going to make a big impact on organizational flexibility down the road.

He might as well take some steroids as well, but only to recover from a long season, not to improve performance.

Stat Boy - Pettitte tried to wait out the Yankees last time his contract was up, and he ended up losing millions in guaranteed money. Yankees should sign him to fill out the back end of their rotation again and let Wang/Hughes/Chamberlin fight it out for the fifth spot... Mitre still under contract? probably not in the discussion anyway. Guadain is a free agent? again, probably not a contender.

Stat Boy is not playing with a full deck, just let him drool on himself in the corner.
Pettitte has done this the last few years. He does not make snap decisions or comments, even when pressed. He was treated badly when he left for Houston but is back because he is a well grounded individual. He did lose money this year by not having (I think) another 10-13 innings pitched during the reg season. He is getting older, but he is still better than average and was able to really bear down in the post season. It is not like he pulls a Favre when it comes to the whole retierment thing.. Then again, I was suprised the Moose did not come back.

Stick a couple more needles in your backside, that ought to persuade you to come back!

Even if he does come back to the yanks will probably just out and get Lackey anyways. Gotta spend the cash for another ring next year..

Stat Boy just seems to comment, negatively, on anything to do with the Yankees! Maybe he wanted to statistician for the Yankees & George told him he would have to work for free...

November 6, 2009  02:36 PM ET

This is any easy choice for them I would think, they really need him, he can still pitch very well, and clutch, so sign him again to a one year contract. and give the man a raise, he just won two world series games for them.
