Will Gretzky sit out Hall of Fame ceremony?

Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will take place in Toronto beginning this weekend and the question that's got everybody abuzz in hockey circles right now is, will he or won't he? Will Wayne Gretzky attend with his wife Janet when the careers of five of his closest friends in hockey are honored? Or will he sit it out, part of his lingering discontent with the NHL over how shabbily he was treated during the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy hearings by the league he helped put on the map in the first place?

Man.....what a horrible post-hockey career this guy has had. Makes me happy that we had Sir Mario in Pittsburgh. That would be a bit childish to me to not show up to the HHOF ceremony, but I'm not in his shoes either.

He doesn't have to show up. He is already in the hall of fame. It's an induction ceremony for other people. He should stay away and have Bettman answer all of the questions as to why the great one isn't there.

Man I hate Gary Bettman.....took the 3rd most popular professional sport and made it a joke to most.

I hope Gretz attends to show his class. Just go and dont say a word to the press Wayne. Keep the silent treatment pressure on the midget. He will put his friends ahead of his personal agenda here as always.

I hope and believe he will attend. He can stay above the classless and clueless Barfman. One day Barfman will be mostly forgotten. Gretz will always be one of the greatest legends.

Booo, I wanted to see him at the HOF game this Saturday.

November 6, 2009  09:44 AM ET

He almost looks like Christopher Walken in that photo.

I doubt he would attend that and risk being on TV.

Gretz has always said all the right things and what people want to hear, so it'll be interesting if he says anything at all this week-end.

Go and take that hot wife with you. You got nothing but fans out there.

oh yeah....that :)

Wayne should go to show support and class to his friends ......and still show his anger at NHL by not speaking one word to the press.

I doubt that it's a Christmas card for Gary.

November 6, 2009  11:20 AM ET

The HHoF is not run by the NHL...Wayne will be there to support his friends.

November 6, 2009  11:22 AM ET

So also Saturday the Rangers play the Flames in Calgary.
Do you think Phaneuf goes after Avery? Payback for the Sloppy 2nds remark last year.

I say yes!

I'd be surprised if he's be there - and not because he's mad at the NHL right now either. I think he would be worried about becoming the Main Attraction and stealing the thunder of his friends - its THEIR day after all. Gretz has always presented himself with class, and I'm sure he'll make sure he doesn't rob the greatest Hall Induction Class of all time of the respect and attention they deserve this weekend (not that Yzerman will be looking for it, but let's not pretend we won't be getting some great soundbites out of Hull on Monday at the least).

I'm looking forward to the game Saturday - the first time I've ever been to a game in the ACC, or even seen the Leafs in general. Yzerman's induction weekend is the only thing making me willing to attend a Leafs game, good or not, haha.

And while Gretzky has maybe not been as "successful" in his post-playing career as Mario, but let's get some perspective here: Around 5 years ago Mario was the one about to go bankrupt and lose the Pens to some other market, until he got bailed out by 4 ultra high quality draft picks that the Coyotes have not benefitted from. The Wayner was part owner of what was believed to be a relatively successful franchise on the "up and up." Gretz also extended himself alot more - tested himself to see what kind of coach he could be. While the test may have failed (I think he failed more as the guy choosing his GM than as a coach, but I digress), he certainly took a risk that Mario has proven averse to.

I won't get into how the Pens have been Bettman's "Chosen Team" of Golden Boys...

That's the approach I'd take. I wouldn't want to not be their for friends, but being there would make the teenie one happy.

So I'd show up and be silent. No photo ops with the teenie one, no speeches/quotes, etc.
