Rumors abound regarding the basketball status of Minnesota player Trevor Mbakwe, the 6-8, 240-pound power forward prohibited from playing in games until his battery felony charge issue is satisfactorily resolved. They include Mbakwe transferring to Division II as well as turning professional to play in Europe.

Why is this scum even being considered at an institutionof higher learning? Where are the Trustees and Prez?

University athletic acceptance via admission should have higher standards but also certain woman/men should have special permission to impregnate and populate. Both aren't going to happen because we live in a way too liberated society which is ruined.

I find it troublesome that he claims innocence but is trying to push back his court back. I would think he would do everything possible to get the case finished and move on with his basketball career. Until the matter is resolved I cannot see a school allowing him to play. His actions make him appear guilty by trying to delay the court process in order to play somewhere. I hoped he would be a big part of a Gopher run to the sweet 16 or more but now it appears he might just be a thug trying to cash in on some quick cash (Europe) or show his skills (DII) to presumably have an opportunity to get drafted prior to the court date. Dude needs to man up, go to court, and if innocent be a beast on the court for a rising top 20 team.

It's the curse of almost any athletic program these days. They are so desperate to win that that colleges will accept anyone who has athletic talent. It's a sad commentary about how our society values sports over other aspects of college life...such as academics. At least AD Maturi did the right thing in suspending him until his court case is resolved.

On the other hand, there's probably more outrage at these universities for NOT letting these guys play. The boosters probably conduct 24/7 tel-athons whenever they see a way to get more wins, regardless of the circumstances. If they let these kids play, it's "meh, nothing new here in sports."

The super-elite recruits across the country would get to play anyway... always a double standard based on the importance of the player.

As long as we're here, I suppose the importance of sports at INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING is a bit out of proportion today, but that's kind of an obvious reality in today's culture.

Even the Ivy League schools occasionally lowers athletic admissions standards for certain minorities to get accepted and play.
