Can Red Sox talk Padres out of Gonzalez?

The one thing the Red Sox must do to bridge the gap between them and the World Series champion Yankees? Acquire Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. New Padres general manager Jed Hoyer and his former boss, Theo Epstein, have likely already brought this subject up once or twice. Starting tomorrow, they'll be together again at the GM meetings in Chicago. Gonzalez would love to play in Boston. This is not a case of a guy who wants to stay in San Diego because the weather is nice. Gonzalez isn't pleased with losing. The Dodgers, Red Sox, Mariners, and Marlins were all involved in some level of talks on Gonzalez at the trading deadline.

Who wouldn't want this guy?? Get as much of the Red Sox talent as you can Padres GM.

November 8, 2009  09:06 AM ET

The guy is an outstanding player who doesn't make very much money yet. Why the Padres would give him up is beyond me unless they get a kings ransom. They have the money to keep him if they decide not to have a bottom 5 payroll.
Just what the Sox need, another 1st base/DH type. Last I checked they still have Lowell, Youk, Martinez and Papi to play 1st, 3rd and DH with Martinez catching maybe 110 games. They'd be better off looking at SS and a corner outfielder.

Not disagreeing-
but he's not the #1 need for them-
they need to figure out heir LF first and then SS
the cr ap they keep trotting out there at short is disgraceful
-AG would certainly give them another big bat- but Youk is a
gold glove caliber 1st baseman...why add to a position of strength, when they have other holes ?

Great minds think alike and in this case minds that fall somewhat short of great think alike.
God I hate working weekends.

I'd be happy to have him in Boston.

November 8, 2009  09:38 AM ET

its gonna happen

the padres arent going anywhere right now

November 8, 2009  09:53 AM ET

Would be a grat add. Who knows what's in store for Lowell so Youk goes to third. As for Lf we resign Bay. Short is still an issue

Well, I think the Sox will match any offers to Bay unless it gets ridiculous. They have an excellent defensive SS, so while I'd like to see more offense at the position I don't want the defense to suck.

As for Youk, he would go back to third where I think he is pretty damn good defensively. Martinez is probably gonna catch at least 75% of the games, which kinda leaves Lowell as the odd man out. Too bad as he is one of my favorite Sox players, but father time doesn't stand still and neither should the Red Sox.

November 8, 2009  09:59 AM ET

BTW, I know next to nothing about this guy. Is he a decent defensive player? I don't want another Dr. Strangeglove patrolling 1st base.

you realize they ain't giving him up for free, right ?
Who are you giving up to get him ?
they're going to want Bucholtz &/or Bard and Ellsbury.
-don't tell me you're giving them back old scrubs

You think Martinez can catch at least 120 games? Possible I guess.

He doesn't make any money yet and he's very popular in San Diego so I would imagine the Sox would have to give up a lot of young talent, one player of which would have to be able to play this year in order to get him.
Isn't the Sox best prospect a 1st basemen?

You're right about a defensive SS-
but your team is getting long in the tooth on the field-
only ellbury & pedroia are under 30-

I just don't think theo will give up the prospects to bring him in

They simply have no financial responsibility. If you're gonna spend 130-150 and not give the smaller market teams a chance at least have the common decency to spend over the luxury tax so some of your money helps out the less fortunate teams. Like the Yankees.

He couldn't possibly be any worse that the calcified shell of his former self they've got right now.

I think Lowell or Papi will be the odd man out and Gonzalez would be 8 or 9 years younger than either of them.

November 8, 2009  10:47 AM ET

Lowell is as good as gone. Youk will play third, Gonzalez will play 1st, they will resign Bay, Martinez will catch, and Ortiz will DH. Youk is legit, Ortiz is a FRAUD. Getting Martinez without giving up anything was genius. But theyll have to give up Clay to get Gonzalez, they robbed Cleveland
