The NHL has expanded its investigation into long-term contracts. League sources say not only is the NHL studying the deals signed last summer by Chicago winger Marian Hossa (12 years, $62.8 million US) and Philadelphia defenceman Chris Pronger ( seven years, $34.9 million), the NHL also wants details on Roberto Luongo's 12-year, $64-million deal with the Canucks, completed in September. All three deals are structured so that the players will receive less money in the final few years. First, and foremost, it doesn't hamper the club if the player decides to retire and it also lowers the cap hit over the lifetime of the deal.

NBA style contracts are a coming. The NHL blew it by not restricting how the money can be spread out like the NFL.

Can't take the contract back now....

sorry Toronto, you aren't getting Hossa, Pronger, or Luongo no matter how you write up this story.

I don't understand how these contracts are bad. I mean it can only hurt the club if you think about it. If I was 28 and playing in the NHL I'd consider it. Being paid till I'm 40 and having stability knowing i'm not moving for 5 yrs or more.

Some Leafs fan in here the other day wanted the Blue Jackets to give them Nash for nothing. You have to wonder about the color of the sky in their world.

Just because its a Toronto paper doesn't mean they're implying the players are coming here. The league can't retroactively cancel the contracts because they are within the rules. They can, however, fine the teams and penalize them draft picks which would be the case.

November 9, 2009  01:27 PM ET

The NHL has already approved these contracts - otherwise those players would never have been considered as officially "signed" to a team and would still be free agents by definition. They are only reviewing them in hopes of closing these loopholes when the CBA comes up...

Hey its a way around the cap I think it was the red wings that started it with Zetterburg?

November 9, 2009  04:18 PM ET

you cant actually lower a cap hit since it is the same over the deal

Really and how exactly they did they put it. Just give us Nash because we are Leaf fans. I really need to stop reading these comments because there are way to many of you not in the HOSPITALS where you should be MORONS.
