Who will play shortstop for Red Sox?

With Alex Gonzalez now eligible for free agency, the Red Sox do not appear to have an everyday shortstop on their roster. When the season ended, even general manager Theo Epstein all but acknowledged that Jed Lowrie's injury history has cast doubt on his ability to handle the position on a daily basis.

They must have a ton of faith in Jose Iglesias. I was under the impression that he is at least a year away, maybe they think otherwise.

No, none of the farm system players are within a year of being MLB ready, and we are still really a year away from knowing whether they ever will be. That is one of the RS's biggest problems heading into 2010.

If Gonzalez would take a 1-year deal then Boston would jump at the chance, but why would he agree to that at this point, knowing that he would have to go through the whole deal again next year? Stability is always preferable to instability. The RS should overpay him on a front-loaded 2-year deal. The ridiculous cost of acquiring a better SS would make the problem of not having AAA players ready to call up even worse long-term, and Gonzalez is so good on defense that it makes up for his offensive medicrity (although he did hit unexpectedly well late in the season after coming back to Boston).

Scouting on Jose Iglesias:

Plus plus glovework. Plus arm. Range is also plus, but there have been varying reports. Excellent instincts. Has the makings of a gold glove shortstop. Also able to play 2B and 3B. His bat is a question mark at this point, particularly power-wise, and he's not likely to add much more bulk to his frame. Pull hitter. Average to above average speed

Yeah, I know what scouting on a 20 year old kid is worth...

Maybe they plan on going after Scutaro. The option on Gonzalez was 6 mil. doesn't seem too bad for a solid defensive SS.

Wait a minute... You mean Jed Lowrie didn't become the greatest shortstop ever?

shhhhh! We don't want to go there. Theo doesn't tolerate dissension.

Not in the eyes of anyone with a brain

They should just throw a rock out the window and sign whoever it hits. Why mess with tradition?

November 9, 2009  08:56 AM ET

Morning all. Off to a slow start I see.

So much for no team in history ever winning a title with a SS 35 years old or older. That 330 batting average wasn't too bad either.
I guess those brilliant minds over at MIT that called him the worst in the league may have been a bit off despite their supossed impartiality.

Considering Lowell's range that would work if they decide to go with 5 infielders. Just have Pedroia stand on 2nd base, which will help the munchkin get a better view, put Youk between 2nd and 1st and Martinez at first.
Ellsbury will have to cover 2 outfield positions but he's fast enough.

Atro is close, but he forgot to say "overpay" instead of "sign"... :(

And BTW, it's easy when you have a future HOF-er at a specific position to mock other teams about that same position. Not so easy with other positions, e.g., how have the Yankees been in RF lately, or at SP for a decade before this year? You mocking the RS SS position would be like me mocking the Jets at the QB position. Does the expression 'shooting fish in a barrel' mean anything to you?

Morning JC.

Balls.

Yankee fans are funny!

As long as the next SS name doesn't start with Hanley and ends in Ramirez, then I don't care who they field
