The next step in the Royals' offseason makeover is to acquire a catcher before Dec. 12 and therefore provide an alternative to offering a contract to arbitration-eligible John Buck. One rumor to watch: A deal sending second baseman Alberto Callaspo to the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher A.J. Ellis, a 28-year-old rookie who currently projects as a backup to Russell Martin following the anticipated free-agent departure of veteran Brad Ausmus.

This is the move that will shake up the AL Central and rocket the Royals to 1st.

A 28 year old rookie that couldn't beat out a 400 year old backup catcher? If the Royals keep aiming this high they might just reach the floor.

If the Royals want to compete they have to do better than this. Mark Teahen and Alberto Callaspo out the door and not much in return. This kind of transaction seems familiar to me just times it by a thousand and throw a Pirates hat on those guys! lol seriously Royals ownership made a public commitment to winning this time last year and so far it looks like they've gone in the reverse direction.

THey made a gd deal in getting rid of teahen he is a .270-280 hitter with no power and they got a starting 2nd baseman and maybe 30 hr guy if he can comebck and if they can get anythng for callaspo they wld be lucky he's like a minature ronnie belliard cnt run, field, thrw, or hit for pwr. They are gtting rid of 2 players wth no upside.

Maybe their dumping salary so they can make a play at Lebron.

They should include a journeyman long reliever for a journeyman long reliever just to make it interesting.

I like Callaspo. He can hit for average and wouldn't be bad off of the bench. The real issue for the Royals is that we are soft up the middle. John Buck can't cut it at catcher, Betencourt is not the solution at short stop, Dejesus isn't an everyday outfielder, Coco Crisp just got cut and Jose Guillen needs to go. We need a catcher, short stop and a whole new outfield. Once those issues are solved, we could move onto pitching, which currently has an ace in Grienke, a solid starter in Mecher, and a good closer in Soria. There's nothing in between. They haven't had a good left handed starter in years.

So, in conclusion... this 28 year old rookie catcher isn't going to solve our problems. Keep the 26 year old Callaspo that just hit .300. News to Royals ownership, we could actually have good, young players in back up positions. Its called depth and that's what good teams have.
