Varitek returning to Red Sox?

Contrary to a report, Jason Varitek has not yet exercised his $3 million player option for 2010. At least as far as the Red Sox know. As Epstein correctly pointed out, Scott Boras usually pushes such decisions until the deadline. To be sure, the Sox expect Varitek to trigger that option. But it hasn't happened yet. Word is it could come tomorrow.

Oh well, they saved a couple of million and he'll be nothing more than a backup at this point. The Sox have already announced that Martinez is the starting catcher so if he comes back, he knows his role.

Anyway, does anyone actually think that he won't pick up the option? Does he really believe that another team will give him more than that with the salaries dropping the way they are for role players? Nah, he doesn't either.

Tek was a great captain, but age is catching up to him. Best of luck to him.

Don't wish him well just yet, you still have another year of him. He'd be a fool not to take that option, but then again he is represented by Boras.

Just because he takes the option doesn't mean that he will be back. If the Sox don't think he can't play anymore then it'll be a 3M goodbye gift.

I'd be shocked to see John Henry eat that 3 mil. He'd rather eat a mile of crap before he did that.

As Shad pointed out, if he's back, it will be as a once-a-week player. If the Sox can get a more capable back-up to Martinez, Varitek will get a $3 mil golden parachute.

Of course Boras probably thinks he can get Jason a 4 year @ $10 mil per deal somewhere....

He ate a lot more saying goodbye to Renteria and Lugo

3M is nothing to the Red Sox. If this was any other player the decision would be easy...good bye. Because it's Tek it's complicated.

November 10, 2009  07:23 AM ET

Boras gave Tek bad advice last year when he had a 10 million dollar option for 2009 and went to free agency instead. He end up with a 5 million dollar contract for 2009 and this option. Not everything Boras touches turns into gold.

Not sure how complicated it is though. So far, they have declined the option. Next step is to wait to see if he picks up the player option and then they can make their next step. As has been pointed out with Renteria and Lugo, the Sox are willing to eat remaining salary and will trade or get rid of players that they don't feel will cut it with the organization or will improve the team by getting rid of them. See Manny and Nomar for examples of this.

no kidding...varitek's deal is like a small appetizer compared to the Lugo/Renteria crap pile.

can varitek play SS?

agree...it gets complicated when an older, long time player actually performs well. yanks overpaid posada but he also came off a year where he hit .330 and he can still hit. if a guy is not performing and hasn't for a few years then its an easy decision. throw sentiment out the window and move on. this ain't the girly leagues....and besides, Boston has always done a decent job of getting rid of guys at the right time - Pedro, Manny...

blame Tek, not boras...tek is a big boy and he can make his own decisions. he should've known better...guy hasn't hit **** three years.

I'm not sure that Martinez is capable of full-time catching duties.

i second that...he's a great hitter, but we all know what happens to great hitting catchers!

Exactly. If you want to show Jason some sentiment, have a day for him at Fenway next April, give him the requisite parting gifts, let him bask in the cheers one more time, and give him a job in the organization if he wants one. But they should never, ever, reward him for years past by giving him a roster spot. He's become the modern equivalent of Willie Mays stumbling around in the Mets outfield.

Dunno...if you had "his hand" following those two words, I guess I could see it...

The Indians, who know Martinez better than any one, only had him start about half of his games at catcher.
