Trouble brewing among Red Sox catchers?

07:57 AM ET 11.13 | Jason Varitek has decided to come back as the Red Sox backup catcher. Now, newly anointed catcher Victor Martinez won't be looking over his shoulder to just chat with the umpire. This won't end well. For Varitek, sitting on the bench for at least four out of every five games and watching Martinez handle the pitching staff is going to be like having your Mercedes repossessed and then finding out your next door neighbor bought it at an auction. You'll still see the car every day, and he might even let you take it for a spin for old time's sake every once in a while, but the keys belong to him now, not you.

Cut Varitek, problem solved. Really a simple solution and one I'm sure they've already discussed. Plus, given Varitek's inability to throw out runners and hitting under his weight, why should Martinez look over his shoulder?

I think that the problem will not be about the catching, but about the amount of hitting that Jason Varitek will get.As his problem is hitting, not catching.I know he has had his problems catching, but I wish him no ill will at all.

I agree with you,but the problem is here and now,and cutting him would have solved any problems, but do you think they will cut him?

Martinez has absolutely nothing to worry about, Varitek is washed up...switch hitting catcher, in his late 20s...its a no brainer, I agree, just CUT Varitek

Yes I think it's time to let Tek go. Pay him his 3M and start grooming him to become there next manager after Tito burns himself out. Which buy the way won't be too long.

They denied the option, then the player picked it up on Wednesday evening. I'm sure these things take time to sort out. At least the Sox have shown they are willing to cut their losses when they have to.

They won't cut him but I'm sure they won't stand in his way to go elsewhere either. Not sure if that is an option given his age and stats over the last couple years

I'm going to post this link again because it is too funny:

I undestand now.I thought that it was a given that he was returning, but I see what you mean in that it takes time for everything to be settled?

The 3 million dollar consolation prize he will get when the Sox cut him. That, and Heidi Whatney.

I think a better analogy would be that Varitek took a big, steamy crap on the hood of his Mercedes, rubbed it in with an auto-buffer and them his handlers took it away from him and gave it to someone who would treat it properly.

Seconded.

Don't worry Victor, I think your job is safe.

November 13, 2009  08:29 AM ET

So his Varitek still the Capt?

November 13, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Or did he iron on that bigassed C himself?

November 13, 2009  08:30 AM ET

He'll be cut before spring training. A classless way to treat a classless captain. Just seems they deserve each other.

Whats your major malfunction this morning?

I am annointing myself as Captain. And since I am such a believer in servant-leader principles, I will just stay here. Just direct deposit my checks
