Will Williams coach Red Bulls or D.C. United?

07:36 AM ET 11.13 | D.C. United has interviewed Curt Onalfo and Richie Williams for its head coaching position, the Insider has learned. The club has spoken to other candidates as well and apparently will seek meetings with additional individuals. In the search to replace Tom Soehn, who withdrew from consideration to have his contract renewed, United met with Onalfo last week and Williams this week, I'm told. League observers consider Williams the leading candidate, but he remains interim coach of the New York Red Bulls, who won't hire a coach until they appoint a sporting director.

hey, lets point out that this is not QUITE a repeat rumor...

in this rumor we found out that DCU have actually interviewed Onalfo as well... apparently DCU is looking for yet another handful of mediocre years..

For that to happen, they have to suck for at least the next 5 years (no playoffs), with great MLS coaches like BB and Bruce Arena failing there, before you can even compare them to the NYRB.

All of these World Cup Qualification games this weekend and we get an Onalfo v Williams thread?
I've posted the set-up for the weekend and get your picks in:

Oh man, these rumours sure are boring.

Makes you wonder if ownership is purposely trying to tank the next few seasons so they can justify moving to Baltimore in 3-5 years...

to be fair, this is a rumor... and while the title is also Truths, i dont think WCQ matches deserve a spot on here unless its speculation about rosters or some form of drama included..

while this isnt overly glamorous, i dont mind seeing it

psssh, they have to much history and too much hardware to be the NEXT NJRB, but i agree we cant let DCU fall into such disarray.... they are too heavily decorated to NOT be one of the top sides in the east (or the league)

...but going after a coach that NJRB didn't even want doesn't look good.

LOL.... what??

Bob Bradley was let go from NJRB and joined up with CUSA, where he built the team from the ground up (even with the crazy Chivas rule first season)...

BA was disowned by NJRB a 1 1/2 early (they are still paying his salary), took a year off, went to LA... and look at what he did...

we should be looking at Richie as the 2nd coming if NJRB dont want him....

November 13, 2009  12:51 PM ET

NJRB's problem isnt the coach... ok, perhaps JCO created his own problems... but in general, its not the coach, its the FO....

NJRB have have averaged 1 coach per year since the start.... they cycle through them like they were the bringers of cancer.... the cancer originated in the FO... they (FOREVER, and still possibly) are run by fools.... Redbull didnt care b/c they were fed lies.... now they are onto them and with the new stadium lies a new FO and new coach...

look at what Richie did with such a dismantled NJRB in such a short time.... he should have won both Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year :P

DCU cant move, remember...they win trophies

the only recent trophy was the USOC...

but i agree, they have too much history in the District.... DC needs to work with United and get them a stadium deal.... on average they pull around 25k throughout their history.... as the league grows so will the population attending... this could equal quite a bit of revenue, not to mention taxes, for the state, govt, and DC

This comment gives away the fact that you don't live in DC. The DC city council is incompetent. Through and through. I'm not sure anyone on the council even knows what soccer is. DCU may stay in DC, but I assure you, it won't be to the benefit of the club.

The only reason we have a baseball team is former Mayor Anthony Williams. Even the council chair opposed bringing a baseball team into the district. The current mayor, as well as the council, is also a fool.

WOW! Good point. looks like the only constant is NJRB FO

At the time, I thought bringing baseball back to the district was a terrible idea. Would Vegas or Portland have been better? We'll never know, but everything about the Nationals has been bush league. Terrible ownership, terrible players, terrible games, but the stadium looks nice on TV. Except for the nagging problem of all those empty seats. I'm pretty sure a lot of people are wishing they could jump in the DeLorean and redo that vote.

From the cities perspective I don't think it was a mistake to bring in baseball. There are 150 other programs that waste far greater amounts of money than DC's baseball team. Granted, the team has been mostly aweful since it's been here, and that hasn't helped ticket sales, but the recession here in the region has also had an impact. The beauty of the nationals is that so many people attend games for the visiting team. One of my friends here is a die-hard Mets fan from New York who simply bought season tickets because the Mets come into town often enough.

What needs to be improved is the overall management of the club. I think it will take sometime, but fans will begin to go back to the park.

that, and it says under my name i live in Indy :D

i am unaware of how DC council thinks, simply saying it would be wise if they DID in fact help DCU
